@notclacke for touchlessly reading magnetic media, there should be quite a few articles out there since this was first done in 2024. For the motion picture part, that's new. There were audible gasp in the theatre at #JTS2026. I am looking forward to see further development on this.

Super glad MMCC is able to present at #JTS2026. For the past two days, we've heard so many questions and comments about the importance of working together, especially on legacy equipment, manuals, knowledge sharing and resource development.

NOW: Caroline Ashworth and Rod Butler, National Archives of Australia - Lessons from a decade of audiovisual digitisation.
Most challenging format - video. QC of non-broadcast format - very hard. Need experienced eye. Double the time you think you need for logistics. Triple the time you think you need for QC. IT (OT?) infrastructure, interconnected systems need to be fit-for-purpose.
Recommend watch if you are embarking on a video digitisation project.

Proven that synchrotron x-ray can be used to touchlessly read magnetic media. Now experimenting with reading degraded motion picture film without even need to unroll the film. It's even sitting in the can. [jaw dropping] 🤯🤯🤯

NLA has a highly secured facility for Piql reels in Abu Dhabi. Government agencies and private organisations can deposit their Piql reels in NLA facility. Can opt for 2nd copy in Arctic World Archive, Norway.

Suspect Iron in the magnetic coating acting as catalyst for deterioration - vinegar syndrome.
Magnetic materials don't do well in cold enrlvironment. BFU master film store -5°C & 35% RH. Only way to preserve magnetic material is to digitise them.

Another example: Virtual Grooves for Archiving. From SDMS to SDAS. Vinyl cutting machine inadvertently developed a way to playback virtual grooves!
In 2 mins they could get a full landscape virtual groove image of a disc.
NAA has 19,000 undigitised discs. This might be a way to help work through the backlog more efficiently.

From Q&A, DU was able to develop this open source exhibits platform by repurposing all the developer-time previously rebuilding Omeka for customisation.
Note: DU certainly believes in investing in internal open source development, which is a rare sight nowadays.

WhisperX, local machines, no leakage and model not "learning". Result: All oral history at NLA has uncorrected transcript. Internal search only. Revolutionised internal workflows.
