12 stycznia to rocznica urodzin Jeana Bérauda (1849–1935), artysty, który utrwalił klimat paryskiej codzienności przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Jego realistyczne obrazy przedstawiają elegancję, rytm i absurdy życia miejskiego w Belle Époque. (fot. Wikipedia) #JeanBéraud #malarstwo #Paryż

"Leaving Montmartre Cemetery," Jean Béraud, 1876.
Béraud (1849-1935) had a long life and career that spanned Realism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism, but never really got the recognition that many felt he deserved.
The son of a sculptor, he studied law but then took up painting, and about the time he did this piece he was achieving his first acclaim. He was popular in his lifetime for his scenes of everyday life in the Paris of the Belle Époque, with works set in the streets, parks, cafes, dance halls, and even a noted work depicting a lecture by anarchist activists.
While other Impressionists fled the city for the country, Béraud, along with is friends Manet and Degas, stayed in the city. He was forgotten after his death, except for study by Russian artists who saw his work ironically as depictions of the decadent consumerist west.
He is being rediscovered slowly, perhaps not as an innovator or an artist of great depth, but he was a superb technician who chronicled the world around him.
Here we have people leaving a funeral; despite a seeming elegance, the man on the left wears an ill-fitting suit and is lighting a cigar on the street, an uncouth gesture at the time. And everyone seems lost in thought, or sadness. A haunting work.
