One year ago...still makes me want to cry.
Was up for a visit in early May and while things were looking better in town. there are huge parts of the forest that are just gone...will take decades to return to something like it was.

Took the time to read the Jasper Wildfire Complex Municipal After-Action Review and my impression of the section addressing jurisdiction and authorities is that it is very even handed. It basically says the jurisdictional overlap created challenges that need clarifying. Yes, requests from the Alberta government were an issue but that was because of a lack of formal agreements to handle this kind of situation.
Overall it's an interesting read and not too long as these kinds of reports go. I also appreciated the detailed timeline in Appendix C.

The interesting thing about the Jasper Wildfire report and the UCP response to it is just how mild the report seems to be. It doesn't make any claims beyond the Alberta government's requests being a distraction to the Incident Commanders. There doesn't appear to be anything said about how much of an impact that was and no blame is assigned. It's simply a comment on an area where communication could be improved in a future incident.
Despite how mild the statements are the UCP seem to be losing their minds over it demanding retractions and apologies.

The report on the response to the Jasper wildfire aligns with my feelings about it at the time. For the teams fighting the fires there doesn’t appear to have been any confusion. The Incident Command System is very clear about who’s in charge of what when teams come in from other organizations.
Where there seems to have been confusion is with the Alberta government distracting the incident commanders with information requests and attempts to make decisions outside of the ICS. :/

@Chigaze It appears they think fire continued along the river line to merge with the other fire and didn’t head up towards Patricia / Pyramid Lakes. Means likely would have possibly burned Edith and Annette. Some really nice places around there 😞 #Jasper #JasperWildfire
