Today I came across a weird #printer problem. From #Debian #Linux I could print to the #Canon PIXMA printer in simplex or #duplex.
BUT, in duplex mode it would print a side, eject the paper, re-load the paper, then eject it again without printing anything on it, and then start the second page on a separate sheet of paper.
This happened from my PC and a separate one using the stock #IPP driver in #CUPS
Annoyingly it works perfectly in Windows...

Because it took me some time to find it, here is the command you can run to setup a printer that supports #IPP (Internet printing protocol) on #ArchLinux:
lpadmin -p MyPrintQueueName -E -v "ipp://192.168.1.254/ipp/print" -m everywhere
You'll have to have the correct privileges to make this work, and put in the correct IP address. But if you're using Arch Linux, you probably know this.
Hopefully someone, somewhere, will find this useful. #FOSS #Linux

@martinsteiger @rapha3l No drivers at all! The operating systems just support the driverless #IPP standards, without explicit support of these printer models.
The printers are certified to fulfill the AirPrint, Mopria, and/or IPP Everywhere standards by being run through test programs, and therefore they are in the list.

LOL, I've had the IPP port forwarded to my printer for a decade because I wanted someone to try to print to it, but never got anything. But just two days after replacing the printer, I got this :neocat_laugh:
I guess whatever scanning tool was used couldn't spot the old printer (a Xerox Phaser). I do remember that the Xerox didn't return anything useful on http://printer:631 (I think it was an error of some sort, but it might've just been a blank page), while the new one (a Brother) shows the same printer status that's shown on ports 80/443.

After more than 20 years I was able to print on a modern printer from my Amiga again (AmigaOne X5000, AmigaOS 4). Arild ‘mcleppa’ Aarbakk has done a great job.
After a long break, I have finally found the time again to not ‘just’ write a news item, but to write a detailed experience report about it. I hope you enjoy it and find the information useful: -
@Anachron @frameworkcomputer @DeltaWye @SenorGeorgie @ljrk Anachron, you will not need to package any drivers. All modern printers are #driverless #IPP printers and using #Linux and #PAPPL for the firmware, the printer will also be driverless.
If you package the standard printing stack of OpenPrinting: #CUPS, #cups-filters, #Ghostscript, ... Void Linux will be good for all modern printers.

In my experience CUPS just works these days if the printer supports IPP and you use eth. But even old printers will work if CUPS knows about them.
Problems may occur if you use WiFi though. Though, that is usually a problem on the printer side when it goes to sleep.
I gave up on USB- B though.

@frameworkcomputer I suggested already to Framework to make a printer:
https://community.frame.work/t/framework-could-make-repairable-printers-multi-function-devices/
and I (leader of #OpenPrinting) and Michael Sweet (Author of #CUPS and #PAPPL, creator of driverless #IPP printing) would cooperate on the software/firmware side.
But they did not like this idea that much.
This would be a printer which is not "less hated" (HP's new ad campaign) but LOVED by its users ...
