  1. #Insektober the 6th: Gryllus campestris.

Feldgrille or field cricket. These very large crickets are threatened by heathland habitat loss, especially in the UK. In 2022, a conservation effort called Back from the Brink reintroduced 70 adult crickets to Cornwall, where they had not been seen in over a century. Follow up surveys the following year estimated the population to be over 1000.

Feldgrille were Germany's Insekt des Jahres in 2002 and Switzerland's Tier des Jahres in 2014.

  2. #Insectober day 5: Gonepteryx rhamni

The brimstone butterfly or Zitronenfalter - lemon butterfly. These butterflies rely on two species of buckthorns as hosts for its larvae. The name "butterfly" may have come from this species, as a "butter-colored fly."

It was awarded the Insekt des Jahres in 2002.

  3. #Insectober 2nd: Cetonia aurata

The 2000 Insect of the Year was the golden rose chafer, or Goldglänzender Rosenkäfer. Adult beetles eat pollen and are most frequently found in roses; the larvae are detritivores and eat decaying plant matter.

  4. #Insectober day 1: common green lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea)

Germany's first ever Insekt des Jahres in 1999 was the common green lacewing, or Gemeine Florfliege. As adults, these delicately pretty insects eat only pollen and honeydew, but their larvae are voracious predators of aphids and often used for pest management in crops.

  5. That's a wrap for the third annual #SeptemBee! This year I painted 29 species of bee (and 1 beetle) that can be found in Germany.

Stay tuned for #Inktober aka #Invertober aka #Insectober aka #Insektober, in which I paint other insects, too! If I can't find a better prompt list I'll stick with the German insects theme - there has been an Insect of the Year (Insekt des Jahres) since 1999 so I'll start with that list!

  6. Today for #ArtAdventCalendar, I have all of the insects I painted in 2024 for #Invertober (I missed it this year, due to moving). Rather than going with the official prompt list, I focused on invertebrates found in my home state of Colorado.

  7. #Invertober Set 2!

    4: Palmetto Weevil
    5: Painted Spiny Lobster
    6: Buff-tip Moth

  8. Took me a hot minute but I'm finally back in the game 🥓 #Invertober

    1: Japanese Sea Nettle
    2: Red-banded Leafhopper
    3: Giant Green Anemone

  9. My slightly late offering for day ten of #invertober (common earthworm) 🪱

Did you know earthworms have a special lip-like first head segment called a prostomium (meaning 'before the mouth')? They use it to sense and manipulate food, and move through soil!

  10. Today is World Egg Day so here's a painting I did for #Invertober last year of a sweet mama desert centipede and her clutch of eggs.

Centipedes never actually meet to reproduce - males just drop off a spermatophore somewhere on the ground for a female to pick up and inseminate herself with later. Females do all the parenting, too, protecting, feeding, and even grooming her clutch of baby 'pedes.

  11. Japanese Sea Nettle, Red Banded Leafhopper, Giant Green Anemone, and Palmetto Weevil!

  12. For #Arachtober today I have another painting I did for #Invertober last year, of a Boulder cave pseudoscorpion - Larva boulderica. First discovered by a particularly curious family of cavers in 2008, the species was finally formally described as a unique species last year.

  13. Today for #Arachtober I present a Colorado brown tarantula, Aphonopelma ????, that I painted for #Invertober last year. The question marks are there because there's lots of debate on whether Colorado has its own unique species (or three or more) of brown tarantulas or whether they're all just subspecies of A. hentzi, the Texas/Missouri/Oklahoma brown tarantula (depending on who you ask).

    Taxonomy is hard!

  14. Okay, I'll bite (ha!). I have a couple things to contribute to #Arachtober. Today, it's this comic I made for #Invertober a couple years ago. Pink Crab Spider party!

  15. Initial designs for #InsertAnInvert2024, a Strawberry Squid. Not sure if I should make the photophores darker or lighter than the main body. I'll print both and see how they look.

(I do intend to add the asymmetrical eyes, just want to make sure the basic design works first.)

  16. A fun way to discover beautiful creatures that help keep our ecosystem alive, it’s worth following @ehrenenglish.bsky.social for some fascinating updates, especially during #invertober (invertebrates are awesome all year ‘round but especially during October)

  17. Another four #invertober invertebrates. Asian Forest Scorpion, Red Velvet Ant, Pink Crab Spider, and African Monarch.

  18. The final sketch for this year's #invertober is a Halloween pennant dragonfly (Celithemis eponina).

  19. A sketch of a tiger centipede (Scolopendra polymorpha), sometimes called a common desert centipede, for #invertober.

  20. Four more #invertober invertebrates! European Mantis, White Spotted Jellyfish, Blue Morpho Butterfly, and Reddish-Brown Stag Beetle.

  21. A sketch of a horned sea star (Protoreaster nodosus), sometimes called a chocolate chip sea star, for #invertober

    #invertober2023 #SciArt #inktober

  22. Four more of my #invertober buddies. Devastating grasshopper, fuchsia flatworm, blue glaucus, and Owlfly.

  23. Samwise Gamgee with beneficial garden buggies, and planting native species! 🌱🐛

For both Day 15 of #Tolkientober: Harmony, and #Invertober: Owlfly
