Great news! The Inventaire Association and @nlnet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a new grant 🎉
For years, Inventaire has been 2 projects in 1:
- A book listing and sharing tool
- An open bibliographic database extending #Wikidata

It can resolve both Wikidata ids (ex: https://inventaire.io/entity/wd:Q1500) and ISBNs (ex: https://inventaire.io/entity/isbn:9781406839364)
Ever since my PhD contract has ended last month, I have been going through my personal project backlog, including this very Mastodon account and actually making progress on my personal website.
Yesterday, I was thinking what to do about my Goodreads account when I discovered @bookwyrm and by proxy @OpenLibrary and @inventaire ! Obviously, I am now on bookwyrm.social.
Because my Goodreads shelves are a mess, many of my books can't be imported automatically, including some japanese light novels and web serials. The latter, I've never really bothered to track outside of dedicated websites (novelupdates, ao3, fanfiction.net) because of how difficult it is.
Big question for people in the know and #librarians, is there a database of web serials or am I doomed to add my books manually (or programmatically)?

Latest developments on inventaire.io:
- The entity editor got a navigation menu (visible only on large screens for now), as well as more subcategories
- We are now using a new barcode scanner engine, so if you were part of the people having troubles with the previous one, there are good chances that it's now fixed!
- It's now possible to search a book by scanning its barcode, with this new button in the top bar

Mais il s'agirait de les lire en entier, pas de les acheter, de les feuilleter et de les empiler dans un coin. En guise de calendrier de l'avent, je vais vous partager les livres que j'ai entamé, apprécié puis abandonné lâchement. Ce sont tous des bons livres et iels méritent mieux. En espérant qu'en 2026, je pourrais les ranger sur l'étagère des livres vraiment lus.

@Matfjogel @sukkoria c'est ouvert à tout le monde ! Vous pouvez ensuite partager votre inventaire publiquement, ou juste à certains groupes d'utilisateurs. Vous pourriez par exemple créer un groupe des écoles du coin pour partager vos inventaires. N'hésitez pas à demander si vous avez d'autres questions :)

Question that I have not entirely been able to fully grasp after reading the wiki for 15 minutes earlier today - what's the relationship between wikidata and inventaire.io? Is one considered "more source of truth" than the other, or are these two parallel catalogues with import/exports happening somewhat organically, or anything else?
What do you use to track the books you read? I just wanted basic stats like when I read what and stuff. I suppose I could just use a spreadsheet or something.
I've seen #bookwyrm and #inventaireio and they seem interesting but I don't necessarily need the social media part of bookwyrm and I don't think inventaire would be useful for sharing books in semi rural Pennsylvania.

@marshgroup @zotero there is an easy way to download your inventory as a CSV or as JSON from https://inventaire.io/settings/data
You could also download public books from another user as JSON : find a user id by adding .json at the end of their profile URL (ex: https://inventaire.io/users/georges.json ) and use it to request the inventory items API (ex: https://inventaire.io/api/items?action=by-users&users=6a65aa87e68e161650bf7741ad001249&limit=100000 )
From there, I don't know if it can be imported in Zotero. Maybe by extracting the ISBNs from the exported data?
