In August, the World Congress of Mongolists met in Ulaanbaatar under the auspices of the #IntlAssocMongolStudies
I've finally returned to my notes to jot down some impressions focused on #Mongolia studies vs. research on Mongolia, 🇨🇳 participants, and on organizational challenges.

Conferences on #Mongolia always occasion for people, sometimes even scholars, to discover their interest in 🇲🇳. Often such hubris in their ignorance.
-
Struggling with conference presentations by 🇨🇳 researchers.
Examples:
- What does Xi Jinping have to do with (Inner) Mongolian grasslands?
- Previous presentation examined changes to herding lives under state- socialism in #Mongolia, noted equation of urbanism with modernity. Chinese presentation on joys and modernity of sedentary lives in contemporary Inner Mongolia with no sense of reflection or irony. -
At #IntlAssocMongolStudies congress, Inner Mongolian scholar asked by Taiwanese scholar, "a) what's greatest challenge in Sino-Mongolian relations, and b) what's the state of BRI projects in #Mongolia
Predictable, no answer to a). On b), "read my 2014 (!) article!". Also quite telling.

Have broken "boycott" of new(ish) Chinggis Khaan Museum in attending #IntlAssocMongolStudies congress.
Building quite useful for conference, actually.
Architecture more handsome in profile.

Interesting to see scholar use PPT template that looks like a stone tablet. Even though presentation is somewhat historical, doesn't seem to be ironic...
