On Tuesday, 7 April, the Global Internet Standards Testing Community (GISTC) held its 3rd online meeting, which was chaired by Alena Muravska from @ripencc.
The GISTC brings together organisations from all over the world around #InternetStandards the Internet.nl test tool and open-source code.
Its goal is to enable knowledge exchange, coordination of efforts, and of course to collaboratively improve the adoption of modern internet standards like #IPv6, #DNSSEC, #DANE, #DMARC, and #RPKI.

RE: https://mastodon.nl/@SIDN/116317873852576082

DebugBear: What is JPEG XL: do we really need another image format?. “In 2018, the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) issued a call for proposals for the ‘next-generation image compression’. Numerous proposals were submitted, but only two were selected to proceed, one by Cloudinary (FUIF) and one by Google (PIK). The two were eventually combined to create JPEG XL (often shortened to JXL), […]

@rickvanrooijen @MastodonEngineering @staff
Valid point. The mastodon.social instance already seems to support inbound IPv6: https://en.internet.nl/site/mastodon.social/3738895/#siteipv6
However, for actual interaction and federation via IPv6 outbound support is needed as well and the latter indeed seems to be missing. Hopefully they can fix this. -
Ars Technica: Google temporarily disabled YouTube’s advanced captions without warning. “Google has now posted a brief statement and confirmed to Ars that it has not ended support for SRV3. However, all is not well. The company says it has temporarily limited the serving of SRV3 caption files because they may break playback for some users.”

Internet Standards Almanac: Who’s really shaping the internet? Our new tool helps answers three key questions:
- Who leads? Which actors dominate formal leadership positions, including chairing various working groups and committees.
- Who speaks? Which actors dominate discussions and mailing lists.
- Who publishes? Which actors author the largest number of technical standards.

Internet Standards Almanac | …pretty and interesting/ish, but I find it clumsy to explore & lacking in opinionation
…for instance, ITU-T and the description of this project:
The elements proposed in the “New IP” model may undermine the interoperability, security, and governance of existing IP-based networks.
… I’d like to see far more strongly phrased.
Nonetheless, the website is worth a look.
The Internet Standards Almanac is a guide for engaging in the standardisation of internet infrastructure. Which groups and committees are developing standards that have human rights implications? How do these standards impact human rights?

Always wanted to play with Internet.nl on your own system?
That's easier than ever... because the test tool is now available as a #Docker container: https://en.internet.nl/article/release-1.8/
Thanks to @sidnfonds for their support.
Happy testing!

What would #theInternet be like if everyone tested and designed their web experiences based on individual connections of maximum 28kbps.
Imagine we have multiple 28kbps connections going at once, but a server basically refuses to deliver to a single client at a speed greater than 28k.
Would such an #internet be intriguing to you?
