Ok, finally… I have confirmation that the pilot doing bucket work on the #BenchLakeFire survived the crash and was able to hike out of the wilderness to an ambulance on his own. Confirmation early this morning from the Custer County Sheriff. #IdahoFire

I was hesitant to release my estimated perimeter of the #CowValleyFire near Brogan, OR (just across Idaho/Oregon line)
But Malheur Sheriff confirms the fire is burning rapidly east and has crossed the highway to wards the south. Brogan, OR is at risk.
I've attached a map of the (red) official last mapped perimeter, with my very rough estimate based on what I see. and it'd be 20k+ acres. Hell of a fire given the amount of retardant that has been dropped today.

I'm out of town for a funeral, so I won't be doing a deep dive, but the #BenchLakeFire has burned 2 acres at Bench Lakes in the Sawtooth Wilderness near Redfish Lake. I was on that ridge 1/2 mile from this spot last week. It's fairly green at 8,000' still, but given the heat, red flag conditions, and forest health, it's concerning. I'm guessing they'll get it contained during initial attack, but if not... 😬

11pm (mountain) GOES-West look at the fires just across the Oregon border shows the River Fire at Owyhee reservoir appears to be bedding down a bit. However the Huntington fire is still quite energetic. Evacuation orders are in place for both fires.

Air attack (basically airborne Air Traffic Control) has just left the #RiverFire so the airshow is over, but what a valiant effort it was. At least two large tankers out of Boise, plus a C130 out of Utah. 4-6 single engine tankers and a flock of helicopters.
Based solely on tanker runs and tea leaves, this is *my* rough estimated fire perimeter as of sunset.
I'm not at home and don't have my laptop, so it's pretty rough... I'm guessing 4k-ish acres. #IdahoFire

As I've been hiking in the Sawtooth & Salmon-Challis recently, I'm not too concerned about large fires at the moment—it's very green still, especially up high.
But there is a ton of grass and fine fuel growth this year—if (when) it dries out, the large-incident fire danger could change very rapidly. I hope it is very late in the season, like last year, and we all have a fairly quiet year in the forests.
Range fires are a whole different story; they could be epic late.
