CW: Does anyone make anything like this? (digital hi-fi amp)
Like a regular analog hi-fi amp, but oriented towards digital I/O and processing.
The front would be pretty similar to a standard analog hi-fi amp except mostly one big touchscreen (higher-end models would have more physical controls, cuz those are expensive).
The back would have a few analog I/O ports (RCA for your analog tape decks and maybe CD player or whatever) but the focus would be on accepting digital inputs via USB so you could share hi-fi speakers among two or more computers, not to mention phono turntables with USB output.
(Side note: getting that low-level moving-coil phono cartridge input to the amp without picking up A/C buzzing was always a challenge; it suddenly occurs to me that just having an ADC on the turntable and sending the signal over digitally is actually extremely practical, and doesn't sacrifice any quality as long as the ADC is good quality.)
Yeah, I know, probably nobody except @Harena and me would have any use for such a device... (we currently route the analog outs from our PCs and laptop through an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R, which works ok but the UX kinda sucks, in large part because of all the analog points-of-failure ...and I'd rather be using it for production.)

The white plastic thingy is from a bread-bag or whatever. (I collect them. As one does.)
The wire is phone-cable being repurposed as speaker-wire (4 wires wrapped together in pairs, but that's not visible here).
The wood is part of an enormous bed-loft that someone left at @KathyH's house before she moved in, and which was used by 3 successive kids over ~3 decades. (It's now in my workroom at #HypertwinManor.)

Latest #HypertwinManor cursed song-cover: "Happy Together" -- but sung by Gollum
I had nothing to do with this, I swear -- it was entirely @Harena and Z; I had headphones on and wasn't listening and am therefore not in any way culpable for encouraging an atmosphere in which this sort of atrocity would be seen as acceptable. :blobcathalo:
("Go on -- sing the lyrics in a Gollum voice, and tell me I'm wrong!" says H.)

End of an Era: taking down all the RJ11 phone equipment and cabling in the office here at #HypertwinManor.
(This is only happening now because I'm hoping to use some of it as a system for wiring speakers; we haven't actually picked up the phone in years... and it's been longer than that since we last had a wired-POTS connection.)

tfw the internet in the living room goes out because the LAN hub there is plugged into a plug bar which itself is plugged into another plug bar in the office, which is inexplicably on the same circuit as a socket in the kitchen which powers the toaster...
...and we are reminded yet again of the long-apparent fact that this house urgently needs rewiring, and yet this is still not the top item on the priority-queue because first the gutters need replacing because they're rusted out and then the roof needs replacing before it starts leaking, along with some siding that's been damaged by water not being safely redirected by the rusted-out gutters, and we are a long way off from being able to afford any of that (and, at present, getting further away).
...only this time, it wasn't even the toaster; we're not sure why it tripped... which just kind of underscores the point.

This is also gonna need attention sooner or later, isn't it.
Fortunately it doesn't seem as extreme as the crack in the bedroom ceiling which resulted in me basically having to rip out all the plaster and replace it with drywall in 2012 -- I may be able to just reinforce it and winch it back up with a turnbuckle or something.
The one in the bedroom evidently happened because renters who were here before we assumed ownership had attached a ceiling fan to the plaster without any additional anchoring to the rafters -- so the plaster-nails were holding the entire weight of a large and rather heavy piece of rotating equipment.
Not sure if that's the case here, but it certainly seems possible.

CW: home repairs needed (brainstorming)
So, yeah, this (see pics) doesn't look good... and no way do we have the money to hire someone to fix it, right now.
The first pic shows daylight coming through the corner of the window in Mel's room; the second pic is the outside view, with his window on the right -- but you can see that the damage runs all along between the two windows, probably due to the utter lack of functioning gutterage above it.
So there are at least 2 pieces to this: the top gutter needs replacing, and the damage underneath needs to be repaired.
The big problem for me is that the top gutter is Just Too Damn High. I do not feel safe working at that height, especially without health insurance.
The obvious thought would be to get estimates and do a GoFundMe for that.
An idea I like both better and worse is to build a deck somewhat below the lower gutter -- something I've been wanting to do for years -- which would then provide a much safer platform from which to do further repairs. The GFM would then just be cost of materials for the deck.
I honestly don't know if I have the energy to carry out that second idea, especially without experienced help, but it's something I'm thinking about... and I'd feel better asking for help with supplies so I can build somwthing than just saying "give me money to give to someone else to do the work".
I guess I'm mainly rubberducking at this point, and looking for ideas.
(Regardless, I probably wouldn't want to try doing anything in the next month or three. I'm still getting Mel's room tidied up, for one thing -- finally having easy access to the window area was what made it possible for me to really notice this issue.)

So this happened... again... (...though this is the first time we've had two at once.)
Usually I take them way back in the woods and let them go, but there were two of them and they were so cute and it's cold (below freezing) outside...
...so I put some paper towels and lettuce and water in a large bucket, and released them in there, and we'll keep them inside for now, at least until they seem more or less recovered. 🐁

I've finally got a working turntable again, after nearly a decade.
Finding specific parts used to be a lot harder. It needed a new drive-belt, and those are rather particular. A large rubber-band won't cut it (yes, I did try).
I may be playing music in the office more now. >.>
