OK, I solved it :) It was just a silly matrix error.

OK, here's a preliminary animation, which still has bugs to iron out. The star group appears to change its sphericity as the observer is moving, which suggests I've screwed up a matrix somewhere. Not too surprising, given the amount of hair-tearing intense concentration and stress I went through today, coding this!
