#holos — Public Fediverse posts

I've opened #Holos ( https://holos.social) after some time and first thing it did was downloading all messages from the out ones of the people I follow.

This is what in computer science is called "an agent".

I mention only because im recent years "agent" seems to be always associated with #LLM, but it does not need to be. Even your mail application is an agent (a Mail User Agent, or MUA for short).

Make peace with agents, they are meant ro work for you.

Btw, attached is how I see the profile of an account I follow from here. It's an account of mine that was suspended for talking about LLMs. Now I wonder if I could be banned from Holos as well, give it runs on my phone ( but I'm still using the domain and proxy provided by @[email protected] ).

I moved the #HolosSocial projects (app, relay and discover, to stay consistent) to my own git at https://git.holos.social/tom79

As a reminder about this choice: I used an AI to write part of the #Holos docs, and also to review and help me fix some code I had written. At first I didn't feel concerned by the debate (no vibe coding on my side), but it went further than that. Out of respect for everyone using my work, transparency and action were needed.

#Fedilab isn't affected and stays on #Codeberg.

J'utilise Fedilab pour mon autre compte sur une instance mastodon, c'est beaucoup plus clair, la timeline, mais je n'ai rien paramétré pour ça.

Sur Holos, je ne vois rien, tout est noyé.
Comme, en plus, je n'ai pas les notifs pour les publi des gens où j'ai mis une alerte, c'est un peu fouillis, ingérable.

Over the last couple of days, I've come to realize that I feel the most comfort to speak openly here on #holos. I'm on #Lemmy, #mastodon and #pixelfed as well... but I seem to compartmentalize some aspect of myself to fit into a perceived mold or expectation of how I --should-- post.

I'm sure that type of self-policing has a clinical name in #psychology or #sociology circles. Until I hear the name for it, in just going to call it ridiculous and try to stop doing it.

In reality... it's not that simple. 😄

A hashtag isn't just decoration. It's a way to categorize your post so that people following or searching for that topic can discover it.

As the official Mastodon documentation explains:

"You can use a hashtag to make your post discoverable to anyone searching for that hashtag."

In other words, every hashtag should have a purpose.

Here's a fun example:

You post a photo of your cat sleeping peacefully on the couch.

Do you really need something like this?

Organize Your Fediverse Timeline — A Simple Method

Today I remembered my early days on the Fediverse, two years ago. After a period rich in discoveries and experiences, I’m sharing the method I use to organize my global timeline — aimed at those who sometimes feel a bit lost.

This method is straightforward and works across the various networks of the Fediverse.

First, once you’ve created your account, the very first thing to do — even before following lots of people — is to create lists.

I recommend starting with a list dedicated to the profiles you want to see consistently on your main timeline. In that list’s settings, enable the “do not hide from timeline” option, then add the profiles you want to appear directly in your feed.

Next, create other lists by theme (tech, art, monitoring, news, etc.). For these, choose the “hide from timeline” option. Add all new profiles to the list that matches their theme.

Once these lists are well stocked with quality content, you can integrate them into your main timeline gradually, one by one. Be sure to review each list’s settings and check “do not hide from global timeline” so the list’s content is correctly released into your global feed.

This way, you’ll have a clearer, more pleasant, and better-controlled timeline.

#Holos 1.11.0 is available.

You can now view and change your email and password from a new account screen in settings. The app also compacts its database automatically in the background to reclaim space and keep things fast, and a notification lets you know when it runs. A new Compact Database button in the cleanup settings lets you run it on demand.
It also brings several fixes.

What about we all run single-user servers, like #holos or something ?
No need to have moderation at scale, everyone is responsible for his own opinion and everyone can decide the people he wants to speak with.

My posts are public, if public means that everyone can potentially see them.
They won't be read by the whole world anyway

I used @[email protected] with the optimized sync off (not on purpose)...
I was always wondering how people should use Holos when it takes forever to load. It wasn't the best experience.
But moving this to optimized sync ON is a game changer. Totally smooth now, and good running!
So,if your holos app isn't running perfectly, check your settings

I tried setting up a Holos instance last week. Downloaded the app from F-Droid and had it working very quickly and easily. There's probably a bit of tailoring config still to do.

The next step would be to create an ID based on my own domain name. That looks very doable as well.

Will I make the switch from my main account of @[email protected]? Not sure yet but this looks interesting.

So, while I'm not sure, the account will take over life posts from here, but for now I'll be boosting here. Likely breakdown of my accounts:

@chuff will be my core account, the one I follow people from, and the one that I post memes, articles, do boosts from, etc.
@chuff will be life posts, work posts, and YouTube shares
@Vextaur will be various short (up to 3 minute) videos on anything, typically work or EV stuff.

Will any of this change in the future?
Sure, its possible, I mean as I mentioned in this post, I'd love to see someone build off of @apps work on #Holos Social to create a more traditional #android #Fediverse server, I mean imagine how the Fediverse could grow if'n having your own server was basically just a matter of downloading an app on a spare phone or other Android device you have laying around ( Android 4 compatibility would let me do something truly absurd) running on your home network, compared to what it takes to self-host now.

New #Holos updates have been pretty great. There are still a few minor things to address, but overall, as a functional local replacement to being hosted on an instance, it’s awesome.

I *did* make a mistake and not backup my data and lost it, but that’s my own fault.
