Re-reading a Georgette Heyer novel, and paused when I got to the point where the "daughter of the younger brother of the local landowner" is gifted £50 by her uncle, reacts with shock, and is told to embroider him a pair of slippers as a gift.
For some reason, I had always thought of this as equivalent to about $1000 in today's US dollars - lots of money for a teenager to spend on tips and replacing things like stockings and gloves for her entrance into society.
This time I did the math. He gave her a bank note equivalent to about $7,700 US.
The cost of traveling to London from Yorkshire: £30-60, or $4,600-$9,200 US / £3,470-£6,900 today.
Current price of a train ticket: between £54 and £227.
It hadn't registered for me just *how much* cheaper traveling is than it was 200 years ago.
