Itotatsu's (いと達) beautiful 'nubatama' (ぬばたま) are named after the jet-black seeds of the hiōgi (檜扇 'blackberry lily').
Thanks to the seeds, 'nuba' (ぬば) came to be used to describe pitch black or dark things.
The seeds were commonly used in poems to describe black hair etc...
