Patrick Michel updates #ACM2026 on the #HeraMission.
Quotes the surface ages for Didymos and Dimorphos as 12.5 million years and <300,000 years respectively.
That was before the #DARTMission impact.

The #HeraMission and also the #DARTMission.

I am working on Greece time for a few days, to call in to the last #HeraMission workshop before the spacecraft arrives at Didymos and sees what the #DARTMission has done: https://www.heramission.space/workshop-2026 .
Thanks go the organizers.

We await the #HeraMission arriving at #Didymos and #Dimorphos to see exactly what the #DARTMission did.

Reshaping and debris from the impact onto Dimorphos changing the shape of Didymos just a little bit.
Relevant for both the #DARTMission and the #HeraMission .

The impact hazard session at #EPSCDPS2025 features overviews of the #DARTMission and the #HeraMission: https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EPSC-DPS2025/session/55132 .
And also a reminder of the importance of avoiding causing an impact hazard when addressing the impact hazard.

Occultation data suggests that Dimorphos is considerably less dense than Didymos, or at least was before the #DARTMission impact.
Need more data; for which the #HeraMission is on the way.

Today on the #arXiv :
Langner et al. 2025, "Secondary impact debris in the Didymos system: what could be observed by Hera?" - https://arxiv.org/abs/2503.08158
Describing possibilities for the #HeraMission observing lingering debris from the #DARTMission impact hitting one of the asteroids.

Richardson et al. 2025, "The Dynamical State of the Didymos System Before and After the DART Impact" - https://arxiv.org/abs/2502.14990
Reviewing the results of the #DARTMission impact.
"The largest uncertainty in the momentum transfer enhancement factor of the DART impact remains the mass of Dimorphos, which will be resolved by the #HeraMission ."

Stickle et al. 2025, "Dimorphos's Material Properties and Estimates of Crater Size from the DART Impact" - https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/PSJ/ad944d
Estimating the crater diameter from the #DARTMission impact as 40-60 m and awaiting constraints by the #HeraMission .
As an aside:
This is why I wonder about the risk of the pending CNSA asteroid deflection demonstration shattering its target object.
-
For those unaware:
NASA and ESA have demonstrated kinetic impactor asteroid deflection, running a spacecraft into an asteroid, with the #DARTMission and the #HeraMission .
I would like to see a gravity tractor demonstration, using a spacecraft's gravity to pull an asteroid around, but it is slower.

Update on the #HeraMission from Patrick Michel for @setiinstitute :
https://youtube.com/live/LKcup8C5zUo
The spacecraft's instruments have been checked out and it has gone through the first trajectory correction maneuver to set up for the #Mars flyby early next year; where it will do some #Deimos science in passing.
2 years to #Didymos and #Dimorphos .

When Hera separates from the Falcon 9 it will deploy its solar panels to get energy from the sun. The upper stage of the Falcon 9 will remain in an interplanetary orbit as well and my return to earth some day. #HeraMission #ESA #ESA_Hera #Darmstadt #Dimorphos #Dart #NASA #Space #science

We have a successful burn of the second stage and Hera reached the interplanetary orbit around the sun. In around 20 minutes we will have separation of Hera from the Falcon 9. #HeraMission #ESA #ESA_Hera #Darmstadt #Dimorphos #Dart #NASA #Space #science

The #HeraMission spacecraft is away; with one additional piece of space junk flying behind it.
#Goldstone is receiving signal from the spacecraft. You can follow when communications are happening at https://eyes.nasa.gov/dsn/dsn.html .
It will now cruise past Mars and get to #Didymos in 2 years.
