Honestly, really honestly, if you watch Phantom Menace with Sidious' plan in mind, ignore the (casual? blatant?) antisemitism, and ignore 50–100% of Jar Jar's antics*, it's a really good movie.
*(Jar Jar's plot scenes are important though, and if you ignore those then shame on you)
