Quick #rant about looking for a tech job in the US right now. I went into a computer repair shop about a week and a half ago and asked them if they needed any technicians. The guy that was there engaged me, asking me questions about my qualifications and writing all of the details down so he could share them with the boss. Well, I got a call about two days ago and they told me that before they bring me into the shop to work, they want me to prove my skills, so they would like me to come get two laptops and see if I could repair them. I told him that if they can be fixed, I can figure out how to do it, and went yesterday and got them. I talked to the boss of the shop who said that he could bring me in, once I brought the laptops back at least with knowledge of what was wrong with them. Well, I get home and open them up to find that neither of them have hard drives, RAM, and one of them is missing a battery, and obviously they've been stripped and this was some sort of sick joke, so I called the shop and told them this, and the owner of the shop said "Yeah, he got them out of the trash." At the time on the phone, the reality hadn't yet set in as to the magnitude of the insult that they had pulled on me, hazing someone who is just looking for work, so I told them I'd come in today and bring the stuff back and talk about working in the shop, but when I go to take the stuff back today, I'll be silently setting the stuff down, and just leave.

My dignity is worth more than continuing to try to work with a shop that sent me home with literal shells of e-waste that they pulled out of the trash, giving me hope that if I fix them, then I can work with them.
