  3. "W.O.L.D." is a song written and performed by #HarryChapin. The song is about an aging #discJockey who travels the United States seeking happiness, which he believes he will find by following his passion for being a radio broadcaster, only to discover that his life, looks, and voice have all passed him by, as hinted in the OLD of the title. The song is sung through the point of view of a phone call conversation from the DJ to his ex-wife.

  10. Discovering my ancestral connection to Pete Seeger brought to mind this song, “Old Folkie” by Harry Chapin, written about Pete Seeger.

This lyric was written in 1979. We’ll need “Old Folkies” in 2025.

He's the man with the banjo and the 12-string guitar
And he's singing us the songs that tell us who we are
When you look in his eyes you know that somebody's in there

  14. This song tears my heart out. Harry Chapin himself said about it, “Frankly, this song scares me to death.”

“Cats in the cradle” is easy listening only if you don’t pay attention to the lyrics. If you do, it’s one of the most damning descriptions of life under capitalism.

  16. It was 🌧 hard in 'Frisco.
    I needed one more fare
    to make my night.
    A lady up ahead waved
    to flag me down.
She got in at the 🚦
    Oh where you going to
    my lady blue?
    It's a shame you
ruined your 🥻 in the ☔️
She just looked out the window

  17. Cat’s in the Cradle by #HarryChapin drives me nuts. The whole premise of the song is that the kid grows up to become a workaholic just like his father. A close reading of the lyrics, however, suggests otherwise. In the 4th verse, we encounter the line:
“You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu”
The son can’t see his dad because, yeah, the job sucks but his kids have the flu. He is taking care of his kids UNLIKE his absentee parent with whom he is done. Essays due next week.
