I have a busy rest of the year and will take a pause on #HamTalk until January. If someone feels inclined to take up the mantle until then they are welcome to, though nobody has to.
-
Sorry for missing #HamTalk tonight. We decorated for Christmas today and then had guests over for dinner and games.

@ingalls @max_in_somer A3. Although the hobby and demographics has points against it... definitely this is one where I think some general level of fitness is helpful, and also be aware of things like hydration, etc. Have seen more than one ham (used to sitting in the shack all day) overexert or put their health in risk under hot sun, having to walk all day, etc. Luckily nothing more than rest and things like water/AC/etc., #HamTalk

Everyone should check out the #FediFridayWinlinkNet ! It is a great place to practice using #Winlink and to connect with others who can help! Follow the #FFWN hashtag and look for weekly net announcements, and ask if you have questions. People love to help!

@ingalls @max_in_somer #HamTalk A2: Spare batteries. Did I mention spare batteries? Also, a second of everything. HT? Have two. HF radio? Have two. Cables? Microphones? Have two of everything. Things fail in heavy use and adverse conditions, and backup is important. (can't talk about adverse weather... in SoCal, adverse weather is "not sunny").

Switching gears for our last question of the night. Feel free to respond to as few or as many as you like whenever you like, ask your own questions, and just chat with other #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio nerds here on the Fediverse! Also don’t forget to check into the #APRSThursday net before 23:59 UTC Thursday!
#HamTalk Q5. Are there any nets you’re fond of and like checking into? What do you like about it and if others are welcome to participate, how can they do so?
-
Now for a question inspired by the last two:
#HamTalk Q4. Do you have any interesting stories from events you’ve worked #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio in the past? This can be any sort of event, community volunteering, field day, SOTA, a DXpedition, etc.
-
Next one from @max_in_somer, also regarding events:
#HamTalk Q3. How do you prepare yourself for long events operating #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio?
-
I’ve got two questions now from @max_in_somer regarding working events. The context is volunteering at community events but I feel like these can also be applied to things like SOTA excursions and field days.
#HamTalk Q2. What equipment do you use for long duration events (10+ hours in one day, possibly including multiple consecutive days)? How do you prepare your equipment for heavy use over this long period, including in adverse weather conditions?
-
#HamTalk question time: If you have a burning question about #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio ask it here. Ask anything you want and let’s see what the community can come up with regardless of whether you’re unlicensed, new, or have been an operator for decades.

Hello and welcome to this week’s #HamTalk, a #Fediverse gathering to discuss and learn about #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio on social media! Starting off as always with introductions:
Q1. Where are you checking in from today and what’s some radio equipment you’d like to show off?
-
#HamTalk starts in one hour at 00:00 UTC (17:00 PDT)! Like last week, I’ll post questions to start off our #Fediverse chat about #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio that all are welcome to join! You can participate by answering the questions, posting your own, or having your own side conversation using #HamTalk.
Questions will be numbered (Q1, Q2, etc.) and for convenience you could respond to them using the same number (A1, A2, etc.) but you don’t have to. I’m excited to chat with you all!

#HamTalk A5. Like others have mentioned, I’d like to pick up Morse code. I’d also like to get a rudimentary idea of coding so I could play with digital modes a bit more.
-
#HamTalk A2. I am not a member of a club but have been in the past. Most local clubs I’ve visited have been old boys clubs where it’s assumed you hate anything that doesn’t match a rural conservative ideology and if I’m going to participate in a club it’s going to be to enjoy my hobby not to discuss politics. That said @kc2ihx said something about NR7WL and that looks very low key and interesting.

#HamTalk A1. Hello from Portland (CN85pm). I haven’t been on the ham bands much lately but I did come across Bob Ross on a low power broadcast TV station last week. My three year old loved watching him create the trees.

@ingalls #HamTalk A5. There's a few things I could use to enhance my experience with ham radio. Learning to solder surface mount components would be helpful (also need better equipment, magnification, and lighting for that). Welding (for building... stuff). Understanding mechanical stuff like gears -- I keep colliding into issues with antenna rotators, trying to build a satellite antenna rotator, etc. all of which require mechanical knowledge I don't yet have. (ie how do you match gear teeth? How do you determine how much power you need? etc. etc. etc.)

Qualities that I think make someone fuddy-duddy: #ableism conservative extremism, fixed mindset, unwillingness to consider viewpoints of others and easily made uncomfortable when confronted with a professional, serious #blind person who is no longer satisfied with the #AmateurRadio status quo. #HamTalk #HamRadio

A1. Checking in from Ann Arbor MI, grid #EN82
The only working homebrew equipment I have is a roll-up 2 meter J-pole antenna that Dan @kb6nu helped me build at a workshop. I also have parts for a 2 meter tape measure Yagi, but that kit didn't get built yet.
I'd like to build a better 1090 MHz antenna for better #ADSB reception, that's probably the next thing on the antenna list.

Q3. Are you active in an in-person amateur radio club? If so which one and what do you do there?
A3. A few!
#ARROW https://w8rp.org has a monthly in-person meeting and a monthly in-person mobile/portable event in a park.
All Hands Active maker space https://allhandsactive.org doesn't have a club license but does do a a regular RepairsDay where I got my 2m ladder line antenna fixed up. #AHA
#UMARC (U of Michigan) https://umarc.eecs.umich.edu meets during academic year.

Q2. Where does one go after beginning level? How does one break into the other side of the hobby?
A2. I think it's different for everyone, but for me:
Find an "Elmer" (is that right? or "Elsie"?) who is helpful and patient and knowledgable and ideally has some spare radios to borrow from time to time. I have been lucky to have had help from @kb6nu #W8TAM #K5HDL locally.
Attach the hobby to something you like - my #SDR helped by listening to #baseball

Q1. Where are you checking in from and, if you have your license, what was your most recent contact?
A1. Ann Arbor, MI, grid EN82dg.
Most recent contact this morning on a morning roundtable net, pedestrian mobile on 2 meters via #N8DUY , with Jim #W8STX as net control. Band conditions fair in the early morning, there is interference when the band is long.
W8STX is there every day, keeps a log that he posts monthly, and generally directs traffic on the net. Thanks Jim!
