@JugglingWithEggs
Didn't I say it reminded me of a section in the book?
The H&MP class sort of carried across into the film, but did not do it justice.Heinlein you might recall was a naval officer as first profession.
Joe #Haldeman's #Forever War was a good response to ST, but you'll not have read that, either. Both are still worthwhile.

CW: us political history
It was on this day in 1972 that Richard #Nixon sat in the Oval Office with H.R. #Haldeman, his Chief of Staff, and discussed something. What it was, we don't know, but we can guess that it was something rather explosive as it was erased from a tape made of the event, creating the now-infamous 18 1/2 minute gap.
I was reading an article from the Museum of Portable Sound which gave a history of that event, partly from a sound engineer's point of view, and thus was pleasantly surprised to find it making a political point which I had already mused upon, as #Watergate was, first of all, something that happened at the beginning of my awareness of what politics was, in a location that was basically local to me, and second, an event which contributed to subsequent and current #corruption at the highest levels of government. That point was hidden in a caption of a picture of the Nixon Library at the very end of the article, and it kind of says it all:
"The idyllic and glamorous Richard Nixon Presidential Library, dedicated to a man who, by accepting President Gerald Ford’s pardon, admitted to criminal wrongdoing in the Watergate scandal, thereby setting the precedent for US presidents to engage in criminal activity unpunished. Nixon’s pardon can be seen as directly responsible for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney’s lack of consequences for establishing the still-operational illegal prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and launching their criminally unjust invasion of Iraq on 20 March 2003, which led to countless US war crimes including the torture of prisoners as well as the maiming and killing of Iraqi civilians. Nixon’s pardon can also be viewed as having paved the way for the war crimes of Barack Obama [ https://harvardpolitics.com/obama-war-criminal/ ], the innumerable illegal activities of Donald Trump during his presidency (including fomenting a treasonous coup attempt, the criminality of which is still being debated), and Joe Biden’s flagrant flouting of international law in his 'ironclad' enabling of (and cooperation with) Israel’s genocide against the Palestinians."

The newest one I have is the last of @cstross ' #Laundry novels, The Regicide Report.
I don't know if you are ready up in that series, I think this is good so far but probably not an ideal entry point.#ArtificialNoodle is slightly but amusing.
#Scalzi's #OldMansWar series has another one out, a reasonable continuation. The first one was another good effort at a response to #StarshipTroopers the #Heinlein book not film, and to #Haldeman 's #TheForeverWar

Osią fabuły jest, ma się rozumieć, wojna. Taka, w której ludzkość staje naprzeciwko innej inteligentnej rasy – Taurańczyków. (...) Kłopot z ową wojną polega na tym, że siedziby obu biorących w niej udział gatunków znajdują się w ogromnych odległościach od siebie. Zanim więc adwersarze rzucą się sobie do gardeł, muszą do siebie dotrzeć.

#KentStateShooting by #OhioNationalGuard(2/n)
...back then--in contrast to June, 2026--it even was a legal deployment if the #Ohio #NationalGuard 💂, requested by #Kent #MayorSatrom.
Even so, it seems to have proven to be the first stone in the avalanche that was to shatter the #Nixon Administration:

> [I]n 1950, #Haldeman’s “quirky” politics led him to (…) leave #Canada for #SouthAfrica.(…) [He] had come “to believe that the Canadian government was usurping too much control over the lives of individuals and that the country had gone soft.” One of Haldeman’s sons [wrote it may've] been “his adventurous spirit and the desire for a more pleasant climate in which to raise his family.” But another factor was at play: his strong support for the brand-new #apartheid regime.
