  1. "Grand Canyon," Gunnar Widforss, late 1920s.

Swedish artist Widforss (1879-1934), trained in Sweden and Russia, came to the US in the early 1900s and traveled to California in 1921. Falling in love with the American wilderness, he devoted his career to painting the rugged American landscape, especially national parks.

He painted a lot of Carmel, then Yosemite, and did some very paintings of the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, and Yellowstone. He obviously loved canyons and majestic rock formations.

His career suffered during the Depression, but he did some work for the Public Works of Art Project, and sold paintings in the gift shops of one of the Fred Harvey hotels, the El Tovar near the Grand Canyon.

In 1934 he was diagnosed with a heart condition, and told to avoid high altitudes, but he died shortly after the diagnosis, of a heart attack, standing on the canyon's South Rim. Sad, but at least it seems the last thing he saw was a vista he loved.

    From a private collection.
