Gulf Stream shifted north during 12,900-year-old cold snap, first direct evidence shows

During an abrupt global cold snap nearly 13,000 years ago, the #GulfStream #ocean current shifted farther north, temporarily disrupting eastern #Canada's oceanic ecosystems, a process that could happen again as the #climate changes, a new study by UCL researchers finds.

The paper, published in Nature Communications, reconstructed the history of the ocean current using marine sediments recovered off Canada's East Coast. The team found that during a time of rapid and intense climatic change known as the Younger #Dryas, about 12,900 years ago, the Gulf Stream shifted hundreds of miles to the north, bringing it closer to the coast of Nova Scotia.

This northward shift has been predicted in previous modeling studies, but the sediment cores are the first empirical evidence of it during a past major abrupt climate event. The research also provides insight into the sequence of shifts that #Atlantic currents are predicted to undergo because of #ClimateChange, giving scientists better advanced warning of major changes.

Most people don't realise:
1. Scotland sits at the same latitude (distance from the equator) as central Siberia, one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth.

.....I gathered all the data about the destruction of nature, but not from the data aggregators like the UN or WWF, since they are widely considered suspect.
Instead, I went to the grassroots movements: the charities, non-profits and NGOs on the ground that gather the data by hand.
It took me a couple of days but I visited all their websites independently and built up the big picture in pieces.

The cold blob, or #NorthAtlantic #WarmingHole, is an area south of Greenland and Iceland where average sea surface temperatures have actually been going down. Researchers have been working to understand the blob for years, given that it bucks the global trend of Earth getting warmer.

"The new research, published May 28 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, supports previous interpretations that the blob's existence points to a weakening of ocean currents known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (#AMOC). "

Parmi les coupes du gouvernement Trump sur les sciences, la dernière en date est le démantèlement d’un réseau de surveillance des océans. Un système qui permet depuis 10 ans d‘accumuler des données sur le réchauffement climatique — ce qui explique son démantèlement — mais dont les missions ratissent en fait beaucoup plus large.

Appelé Ocean Observatories Initiative, il s’agit d’un réseau de plus de 900 stations d’observation automatiques accrochées aux fonds marins du Pacifique et de l’Atlantique au large des côtes de l’Alaska et du nord-ouest d’un côté et de l’autre des deux côtes de la Caroline du nord, plus une zone située entre le Groenland et l’Islande.

Les données récoltées dans cette dernière région, qui le sont par une collaboration internationale, sont essentielles à la compréhension des changements en cours dans la '"boucle marine de l’Atlantique nord" (l'Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, ou AMOC), ce fameux courant incluant le Gulf Stream venant du Golfe du Mexique et dont on craint le ralentissement voire l’interruption qui aurait des conséquences dramatiques sur la météo des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.
