I have begun work on an analysis of the entire open source “stack” from the perspective of the goals of Guild Alpha. Recommendations will be made alongside each analysis. Feel free to talk with me here or on the post linked below.

Recommendation Targets
- Lower the barrier to entry for contributing to open-source projects
- Fast track the learning process of new contributors to equalise the skill set of all open-source contributors
- Remove barriers for the formation of ad hoc teams
- Minimise effort required to sustain development

Other Considerations
- Avoid subscription to a specific ethos (i.e. “cloud-native”) or set of tools
- Many contributors are not coders
- Recommendations should be as close to their context as possible

Question for open source devs:

I'm currently doing research into simplifying & standardising spinning up developer instances/environments for open source projects. I don't intend to lock devs into a specific way of doing things but providing options.

The current tools I'm interested in are Development Containers & DevPod, DevBox & EditorConfig.

I'm doing this as part of GuildAlpha and it's still early days. So the questions for fellow devs:
- Your opinion in general
- What projects have you found easiest to set up?
- What pain points have you experienced when trying to contribute to a project and how would you prefer they were solved?
- Opinions on the tools I've mentioned especially if you've used them before
- Other tools that may suit this usecase
- What would be a deal breaker for you?

The development of this feature was a team effort organized as a #GuildAlpha sprint and would not have been possible without the help of @slumberingcat, @tomat0, @RyunoKi and @smallcircles among others.

GuildAlpha currently has three proposals for upcoming sprint. Our members will vote on what they want to work on in the next few days.

Kbin Moderation Application - Allow users to request to take over a community with inactive moderation.
Forgejo issue making magic-links - Allow users without accounts on Forgejo/Codeberg to create issues on repositories (if allowed) via magic-links and light accounts.
LibRate ActivityPub Support - Add ActivityPub support to a new project named LibRate

We were able to complete the #Bookwym migration project and are now in the proposal phase for the second #GuildAlpha sprint.
