Poppy caught her dewclaw running through the backyard in the dark last night.. whenever she poops, she takes off running like she's just expelled demons and they're trying to get back in!

There's no blood, and it doesn't look split or cracked at all... my guess is that she just gave it a yank and she's leaning I to the Dramatic Greyhound™️ trope.

She's not limping (she did for half a beat last night when she did it), but she yelps if I touch it. She's fine when she touches it though.

Anyways, I've booked her in for a vet visit next week to get her grippers clippered, because she's got black nails and I don't want to risk cutting down to the quick.

Dog Vet Visit Update:

Both dogs are very healthy.

They both have a little bit of dental tartar and we need to book them in for a teeth cleaning and possible extraction of 1 tooth on each dog. Dogs dental health is pretty much decided by early diet, and both of these dogs are rescues.. so keeping their teeth healthy is an up-hill battle.

Mia was her normal anxious self, but well behaved for the vet. She has a lot of trauma associated with vet visits because of how badly she was injured when she was first rescued, but she's getting better with them.

Poppy was her inscrutable self, just watching everything quietly and vibrating into another plane of existence if anyone looked at her (if you're familiar with greyhounds, you know..). When the vet went down on the floor to say hi and examine her, Poppy headed over to sniff her which is super unusual for her - she's usually very standoffish with strangers.

I'm nervous about the dental cleaning for Poppy. It's done under a general anaesthetic, and greyhounds can be really touchy under anaesthetic.. but it needs to be done.

We also talked about diet, and are going to move them from a home cooked diet to a high quality kibble with toppers, because it'll be easier to balance the calcium and phosphorus they need, which will help counter bone issues like osteoarthritis (which can especially be a thing for greyhounds).

And everyone LOVED Poppy's disco ball shirt.

We have to take the dogs to the vet today (vaccination time).. which means:

- take Mia to pick up my housemate from work, and drop them both at the vet
- come home and get Poppy, take her to the vet
- have the vet visit with both dogs
- drive Poppy home and get her settled inside
- go back to the vet to pick up Mia and my housemate
- drive home

I have allergies, and a deviated septum, and chronic migraines, and tonnes of other reasons that I go through a lot of tissues.

I'm always within reaching distance of a tissue box, I always have at least 98 tissues wadded under my pillow (give or take 6), and it's a running joke between Greg and I how I leave a trail of tissues scattered behind me like some weird chronic illness fairy dust.

Anyways, Poppy has decided that her favourite thing to do at the moment is shred tissues.. and because of my tissue habits, there's no lack of them to be found by her..

Today's number of shredded messes: 4 (so far)

We have two dogs, one is a greyhound and the other is a mix. They very occasionally bark when they're in the yard, but only when the other dogs in the neighbourhood are barking or if something is happening.

I'm a student who is pmuch always home, so I tend to just bring them back inside when they start barking because not only don't I want to listen to them barking, but I don't want them getting worked up and anxious.

The neighbour over the back fence has loud kids who yell and scream in the yard when they're playing out there, and who hit the fence to work the dogs up so I just bring them in whenever their kids go to play.

Yesterday I noticed that the neighbours have installed a small speaker on a high pole at the back of their backyard, pointing directly into my yard. My guess is that it's one of those devices that plays a sound to "stop" dogs barking.

I don't believe in using punishment to train dogs, but also it feels REALLY fucking creepy and invasive to have a device pointed into my yard without even chatting with me about the issue at all.

I'm not sure what to do about it, because I don't feel like it'll go well if I go and talk to them.. (seeing as they're the type of people who apparently point devices into other people's property without talking to them), and we rent so I don't want shit starting that could end up with them complaining to the owners.

I'm not sure I'm asking for advice, seeing as the only real advice is to go and talk to them..

I think I just want to feel like I'm not being stupid by finding a speaker pointed into my backyard invasive and creepy.

I gave Poppy the tiniest little lick of strawberry ice-cream and SHE IS OBSESSED!

She's never really been interested in people food, I think because she doesn't realise anything that I have is food because it doesn't smell like treats.

But after this taste of ice-cream, she's stalking me, she's standing in front of me and just staring, she's trying to use Jedi Mind Tricks to convince me to give her another taste.

Moments like this are so cute because I get to watch her shifting further away from abused dog mindset and get more comfortable with being a pet.

It's Poppy's Gotcha Day today, so we did Subway as a treat!

I can't believe we've had her for a year now. She's so calm and gentle, such a delicate smoosh. It's been amazing to watch her grow into being a pet, considering that she didn't know how to be inside a house, how to play with toys, how to even be pet and cuddled.

She's 3 years old, and was kept with racing dogs. She wasn't raced because she's too small, and seems to have been bullied by the dogs she was housed with because she has bite scarring around her hind quarters.. so I think they used to chase her.

She's amazing, and we love her to bits. She's been such a loving addition to our household.

I posted a picture of Poppy in a greyhound group on Facebook.. the picture of her with the octopus hat on.

A guy responded saying "this is why dogs bite people".

I looked at his Facebook account, and the entire thing is written from the pov of his dogs, in a baby-voice with deliberate misspellings:
"Hesloo everyboody. Gracie here.
I was grumpy today.
I took breakfast in the conservatory this morning.
Peanut butter toast was served to me."

I've had dogs for 35 years (51 years if you count the dogs we had when I was a kid), and I've literally never once been bitten. I was bitten by a strange dog in a car park when I was 7 years old... that's it. Because I know what I'm doing.

Meanwhile, you're feeding your greyhound toast and good-os, and using them for social media clout.

We're not the same.
