  1. Mentoring the new engineer on my team has been more rewarding that most of the projects I've ever built in my career.

  2. Hm, looking at the posts related to the tags. #greybeard is used much more specific for IT than #greyhair

    First point: This is not mainly about age check. See here: „it sometimes surfaces in related subjects like this.“ cloudisland.nz/@rmi/1165304338

    Second point: Systemd aims to unify the distributions to some extend social.tchncs.de/@hierkiosk/11 so it is understandable that „greyhairs“ which are used to a number of different designs don't want to cope with it. Live and let live, I would say to both sides?

    Btw. #greyhair is a nice word, a gender neutral term for #greybeard.

  12. @drscriptt @monospace I got my workplace almost entirely converted to XML back when it was "fresh" and then JSON took over and we've mostly avoided the shift.
    Explaining to people why I prefer XML over JSON when they're too young to understand the move from CSV is just hard.

  13. my `.aliases` file is older than many of my coworkers.

  14. @fluffy My nuanced take on this is that, when used with caution, #LLM can augment those who know what the heck they’re doing, but in the hands of the clueless they are downright dangerous (especially when their default modus operandi is to be a sycophantic sidekick).

    I’ve found it amusing to rebut a response with a “are you lying?” or better yet “user is #genx and a #greybeard so don’t flatter or bluff or exaggerate”.

  15. A #greybeard gave me some #careeradvice while we were working late on security reviews that is some of the best advice I've ever heard.

    He told me to focus on retirement as early as possible. Pay off debt, and put back just enough investment that I can quit my job and work for something like a nonprofit or open source work that pays too little to cover the bills normally. Retirement isn't about not working. It's about doing something you actually care about.

  16. Why would I want to get rid of my grey beard? I'm thrilled it's finally starting to turn!

  17. I still shutdown a Linux machine as if it's the Clinton administration, and I'm not sure I can stop:

    $ sync
    $ sync
    $ shutdown -h now

  18. I remember when Alta Vista and Yahoo were first starting to index the web. People wanted to be on the web, but they were really worried when they found out that folks could for instance download their art.

    Early in my career, in 1997, I built an application called Americash Mall ( web.archive.org/web/1997062319 ). Some of our first vendors were art dealers. They were mortified when they discovered you could right click and save an image. I spent so long writing JavaScript to prevent that. Then I realized you could just go pick it up from the caching. There was much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth.

    I wonder how much this is similar to the AI problem we're having now. Yes, it is different from search engine crawling. But it's really just kind of the next step. I'm not sure I like it, but I understand why it's headed that direction. Semantic web is something we've been looking at for a very long time. This is just forcing the issue with technology, rather than doing it manually with tags.

    I don't know. I certainly don't think it's worth all the investment that's being poured into it. I have a hard time questioning that this isn't going to be what we're all dealing with in the future, whether we like it or not.

  24. @aka_pugs Though the 11/780 was a few years later, I loved working as a developer on VAX/VMS. #greybeard

  25. I pulled all 5 grey hairs from my beard this morning. I probably shouldn't have, but it felt like affirmative self care, and you need that kind of thing on a Monday.

  26. I'm likely spitting into the wind on this, and I know they are considered secure, but I cannot STAND magic links for authentication.

    It's very clunky, and mega annoying to have to flip over to my email just to login - and some services are now using that as their only authentication method.

    Yes. Passwords definitely suck - but at least allow me to configure a passkey.

    It triggers my neurospicy brain in a major way. So much so that I have more than once deleted accounts for services minutes after signing up upon realizing that it's their only option. I will surely do so again.

  27. One thing puzzled me slightly over the last couple of days. Watching the auth logs I see login attempts with the following user IDs:

    2024-11-30 SSH ALLIN1MAIL
    2024-11-30 SSH PDP11
    2024-11-30 SSH PDP8
    2024-11-30 SSH TELEDEMO
    2024-11-30 SSH DECMAIL
    2024-11-30 SSH DECNET
    2024-11-30 SSH SYSMAINT
    2024-12-01 SSH SYSTEST_CLIG

    which to this #oldfart #greybeard sounds very #DEC #VAX-like.

    Anyone else seeing this? Or is somebody out there actually running an Internet-accessible VAX somewhere?

  28. One of the true joys of being an IT #greybeard is getting to introduce people to the legends I grew up on – like, The Jargon File, and the Meaning of Hack. In particular, I got to tell someone about the Robin Hood/Friar Tuck #hack today.

  29. I am so tired of having to deconstruct marketing language around technical products. In a lot of cases it turns me off from looking deeper into things.

  30. @zkat not an "editor long gone" but...
    In the Scite editor, new sets of search results get appended to to the same pane. I find this great when trying to understand code by hopping from function call site to definition to function call.
    Can just scroll back to older searches and follow a different path...

  31. Finally got the stuff I needed packaged up, and pushed to :Factory, so if you're one of the three people on the planet using #greybeard enjoy the new rofi launcher, plugins, and other little QOL improvements that you should be seeing soon-ish.

  32. Just received the periodic groups.io membership verification. I am subscribed to 19 mailing lists. Over the past year there has been traffic on 2 of them, to the tune of maybe 20 mails in total.

    Such is the state of federated communication these days...

  33. #Traditional #sysadmin #curse you may not be familiar with...

  34. @Daojoan The #Linux documentation project at tldp.org was such a wonderful resource. A vast library of HOWTOs, guides and FAQs, all as txt and html, document history included. Last updated in... lemmecheck... 2015.

    *sigh*

    Please remember: Everytime you publish a 12 minute video tutorial on youtube instead of writing down and uploading a 12.000 character text file, somewhere a #greybeard dies in great agony...

  35. I sat in a very old style cafe while Boz Scaggs played on the radio, eating by my eggs florentine like the past 30 years never happened. Soon I’ll be spending all day learning more about FinOps, which was definitely Not a Thing back then. #tech #memories #greybeard #bleh
