  1. Three #GrassFires in 24 hours as #London hits 33C

    James W Kelly
    8/12/2025

"Three grass fires have been tackled by London Fire Brigade (LFB) crews in 24 hours as the capital records the UK's highest temperature of the day at 33.3C (91F).

"About 70 firefighters in 10 fire engines tackled a fire at the Wanstead Flats parkland in north-east London on Tuesday.

"A grass fire had been put out in the same area the previous evening.

"A further 60 firefighters also put out a grass fire of about three hectares (7.4 acres) in Northolt, west London, on Tuesday afternoon."

  6. Windy, dry weather in #Iowa fuels grass fires
A number of #grassfires broke out across Iowa on Feb. 8, due to high winds, dry conditions and ongoing #drought. Various rural areas dealt with larger fires in Corydon, Indianola and New Virginia.

  7. New Climate Council report: Powderkeg: Australia primed to burn.
prevalence of grassfires. This may be particularly evident in 2023/24 summer, and may be amplified further if an ElNino eventuates.
Vegetation growth follows flooding events and grasslands dry out much faster.
Is Australia prepared? Not when we are authorising gas expansion.

  8. Here in Australia: Kangaroo grass (Themeda Triandra) is a keystone species for ecological fire management according to the Ecological Society of Australia.

"Regular burning maintains kangaroo grass abundance.
Where kangaroo grass abundance declines and is replaced by less flammable herbs and leaf litter, fires do not spread until fuels are drier. Burning under dry conditions can damage trees and increase the density of woody plants that may fuel future intense fires."

Outlines importance of regular cool burns for maintaining ecosystem integrity and reduce fire risk.

In a warming climate we need to adopt indigenous practices of more cool burning which nurtures the landscape.

  9. @DameHolly yes, definitely a concern, especially for 2023/24 summer. This year, though, it is #grassfires that are a greater risk.

  10. Grassfires risk high in Victoria and NSW:
You might think after all that rain in last 12 months with La Nina that wildfire risk is low.....but
Prepare for grassfires after ‘prolific’ spring grass growth, firefighters warn
Heavy rains have led to the ‘highest fuel load in a decade’ in some parts of western Victoria and NSW.

Just a couple of heatwave periods can dry out grasslands and prep them for fire.

  11. After all the flooding rains in Australia this past year we still face elevated fire risk for Summer 2022 according to the AFAC summer outlook. Fuel loads are elevated (All that rain has stimulated growth) while fuel reduction has been difficult to undertake. More likely to see #Grassfires than Forest fires, but grassland fires can move quickly and can be just as deadly.
