The Gowanus Canal may be one of the most storied waterways in the country, certainly in New York. Here’s a neighborhood bar commemorating one of its dark tales (see alt text).

“This was not the Gowanus Canal of the last thirty years. It… was almost unrecognizable. Bulkheads stretched high above our heads. And then the final blow: high rise buildings soaring toward the sky, creating a new canyon within the heart of Brooklyn.” — Mark D. Phillips

  39. Touching the Gowanus Canal?

I recently came across Clive Thompson's Linkfest newsletter (hosted on Buttondown just like my own Newsletter Leaf Journal). Each issue consists of links he collected from around the web with commentary (also similar to Newsletter Leaf Journal, but with more links and commentary). I saved a good number of links from all the issues (mainly science and history related) that appeared in my feed reader after I added his feed. I also found a couple of websites of interest from his newsletter that […]

  41. Carroll Street Bridge Proposals

The Carroll Street Bridge is the second bridge crossing Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal, situated between the Union Street and Third Street Bridges. It is the most interesting of the Gowanus Canal Bridges in that it is the only wooden bridge of the bunch and the oldest of three remaining retractable bridges in the United States (see Untapped New York article). Unfortunately, it has been closed since 2021 for repair and meintenance work. The Bridge is reportedly reopening in the near future (I am not […]

    "Troubled Water

Diving into the myths of the Gowanus Canal

CATFISH WITH THREE EYES lived in the Gowanus Canal. I can say this with confidence because I have seen the evidence.

The catfish was shiny and pitch-dark. After a fisherman hooked it and reeled it out of the brackish water, it lay splatted on the Brooklyn sidewalk next to what appeared to be a discarded slice of pizza. This scene was captured on video and sent to a local news site from an anonymous aol.com email address."

  50. More from the backlog. A scorching summer day spent wandering Gowanus in 2011. At one point, I ran out of water and could only find a beauty salon. They were quite nonplussed, but I enjoyed their air conditioning. This will be looking south from Ninth Street towards the BQE. The Gowanus Dredgers are still around to rent canoes to you!
