  1. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 04-24-26

I am a bit late today because I had a rush assignment to take care of. But now that it has been taken care of, I present for your enjoyment today's edition of Pook-Emu Bee links (note that "we" will be off until Sunday or Monday since tomorrow's links will be packaged in The Newsletter Leaf Journal.) 1. Massive fire rages at historic NYC church rebuilt after devastating inferno 138 years ago, wild photos show (Zoe Hussain for the New York Post. April 23, 2026.) Terrible news. I hope it ends […]

  6. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 04-07-26

I have a few new work assignments today (Sad!) but more than enough time (or just enough time) for our regularly scheduled edition of daily Pook-Emu Bee links. 1. OpenAI calls for robot taxes, a public wealth fund, and a 4-day workweek to tackle AI disruption (Tom Carter for Business Insider. April 6, 2026.) I came across an article recently suggesting ways the big AI players could modify their PR approaches. I said it was impossible. The people running them have no theory of the mind for […]

  11. Touching the Gowanus Canal?

I recently came across Clive Thompson's Linkfest newsletter (hosted on Buttondown just like my own Newsletter Leaf Journal). Each issue consists of links he collected from around the web with commentary (also similar to Newsletter Leaf Journal, but with more links and commentary). I saved a good number of links from all the issues (mainly science and history related) that appeared in my feed reader after I added his feed. I also found a couple of websites of interest from his newsletter that […]

  12. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 03-23-26

Monday is the beginning of the work week. But it is also Pook-Emu Bee links day. Of course, every day except Newsletter Saturday is Pook-Emu Bee links day... 1. Hiding Behind Pen Names (Jerome Mazandarani for Anime News Network. March 23, 2026.) In this case, changing a pen name to hide a conviction for photographing a 15-year old student in violation of Japan's Child Prostitution and Pornography Act. 2. Clean-up, construction inch forward at Gowanus Green amid concerns from residents, […]

  13. Carroll Street Bridge Proposals

The Carroll Street Bridge is the second bridge crossing Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal, situated between the Union Street and Third Street Bridges. It is the most interesting of the Gowanus Canal Bridges in that it is the only wooden bridge of the bunch and the oldest of three remaining retractable bridges in the United States (see Untapped New York article). Unfortunately, it has been closed since 2021 for repair and meintenance work. The Bridge is reportedly reopening in the near future (I am not […]

    "Troubled Water

Diving into the myths of the Gowanus Canal

CATFISH WITH THREE EYES lived in the Gowanus Canal. I can say this with confidence because I have seen the evidence.

The catfish was shiny and pitch-dark. After a fisherman hooked it and reeled it out of the brackish water, it lay splatted on the Brooklyn sidewalk next to what appeared to be a discarded slice of pizza. This scene was captured on video and sent to a local news site from an anonymous aol.com email address."
