  1. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 08-07-26

I am a bit late today, but I decided to keep the Pook-Emu Bee links running with four in a row before our off-day tomorrow (Newsletter Saturday). 1. Private email is fine, actually (Matthew Guay for Buttondown Blog. August 7, 2026.) I agree. But I my own solution (SimpleLogin) is not specifically listed (they note Proton Mail, which now owns Simple Login, but I have SL separate from Proton). 2. THE MORNING RANT: PepsiCo (Frito Lay) Snack Sales Decline as SNAP Restrictions Kick In (Buck […]

  3. The #gowanus interview with #hasanminhaj is the best thing I've seen on the internet in a while.

It left me feeling encouraged in my efforts to divest from the surveillance state and help my communities do the same.

I deleted Facebook the other day after the beeswaxgate incident. I want a local/hyperlocal swap meet type of setup that does not involve Facebook Marketplace. I hate that the #buynothing communities are largely using Meta to operate. Anyone have ideas or success stories about how to create something like this that is manageable to operate without big tech?

I'm looking right now for a used laser printer. I know they're all over FBM for between $20-50. But how do I find one otherwise???

  5. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 06-15-26

Monday is a fun day. One reason Monday is a fun day is because it marks the return of Pook-Emu Bee links after the weekend. Speaking of the weekend, I published links and commentary to enjoy in Saturday's Newsletter Leaf Journal 284. 1. Historic Carroll Street Bridge in Gowanus reopens after 5-year renovation (Aaron Ginsburg for 6sqft New York City. June 11, 2026.) The above photo is from my walk to the re-opened Carroll Street Bridge. Why did I go to the Bridge? NLJ article […]

  6. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 06-09-26

I am on a daily Pook-Emu Bee links roll. Today, I keep it doing with a third consecutive edition of the links. 1. Construction of jail in tony NYC nabe turns into potentially deadly ‘clown show’ with failling debris: records, locals (Nicole Rosenthal, Kevin Sheehan, and Katherine Donlevy for the New York Post. June 8, 2026.) Boerum Hill is "tony" but that particular stretch of it was not "tony" even before the monstrous jail construction project (not least because the new jail is […]

  10. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 04-24-26

I am a bit late today because I had a rush assignment to take care of. But now that it has been taken care of, I present for your enjoyment today's edition of Pook-Emu Bee links (note that "we" will be off until Sunday or Monday since tomorrow's links will be packaged in The Newsletter Leaf Journal.) 1. Massive fire rages at historic NYC church rebuilt after devastating inferno 138 years ago, wild photos show (Zoe Hussain for the New York Post. April 23, 2026.) Terrible news. I hope it ends […]

  12. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 04-07-26

I have a few new work assignments today (Sad!) but more than enough time (or just enough time) for our regularly scheduled edition of daily Pook-Emu Bee links. 1. OpenAI calls for robot taxes, a public wealth fund, and a 4-day workweek to tackle AI disruption (Tom Carter for Business Insider. April 6, 2026.) I came across an article recently suggesting ways the big AI players could modify their PR approaches. I said it was impossible. The people running them have no theory of the mind for […]

  14. I’ve mentioned Postmark Cafe before in #Gowanus, #Brooklyn, #NYC

They are great people and care about their community. They welcome everyone and have a free community fridge that they support.

I highly recommend visiting and giving them your business if you’re in this part of Brooklyn.

  18. 499 President transforms Gowanus with Union Market, Corto, and Spear Physical Therapy, creating a dynamic mixed-use community that blends retail, dining, and wellness in Brooklyn's evolving landscape. #Gowanus #Development

  19. Then Beyondo Band at Lowlands. Eric Biondo with a band of NYC try-not-to-miss's. Progressive funk-and-groove, the kind of stuff the city used to thrive on back at the turn of the century. The place was *hopping*. Great music, great vibe, great room.

  20. Tonight: one of those "I knew it was gonna be good, didn't think it was gonna be *that* good" sets down at Lowlands. Guitarist Gregg Belisle-Chi backed by Stomu Takeishi on bass and Michael W Davis on drums and they had an almost Wayne Krantz Trio-lite thing going, which is high praise from me. Which is apt because I'm starting to think of Lowlands as a kind of bizarro Brooklyn 55 Bar. They really took things to that place.

  22. thenewleafjournal.com/may-and-

There is no better time than the dog days of August to take a look back at what we published in May and June.

  23. Tonight: when Tim Berne plays Lowlands it's kind of can't-miss for me. One of those perfect gigs for the space situations. Same band as last week with the addition of Aurora Nealand. Bet you didn't know your free jazz band needed an accordion, but damn straight it does! Just a stellar set in a room that has no business masquerading as a jazz club.

  24. Happy Cleaners Cargo Trike in Gowanus

    thenewleafjournal.com/happy-cl

Documenting a cargo trike owned, decorated, and operated by Brooklyn-based Happy Cleaners.

  25. #Gowanus development proceeding at warp speed too bad it's all going to be under water

  26. Tonight: walked in at setbreak like a freakin newb, but worth sticking around for a headspinner set of midweek freeform at Lowlands. Simon Jermyn on bass, the incomparable Jonathan Goldberger on guitar, the eternally grinning Josh Dion on drums, and new-to-me Yuma Uesaka on horns... Literally all the horns. Decent crowd, too, with nearly everyone else here a musician themselves. Good times in BK.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #jazz #jams

  27. Tonight: seen Visitors Trio a few times and usually end up wondering why they don't play together more often. Organ player JP Schlegelmilch with the severely underrated Jonathan Goldberger on guitar and the severely underrated Jeff Davis on drums. Jammy progjazz that goes from compositional complexity to spacey exploration and back again. More early week magic at the severely underrated Lowlands Bar.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #jazz #jams

  28. Tonight: wouldn't miss a Tim Berne Tuesday at Lowlands if I didn't have to. Always a treat to see a band same-but-different a regular gig. Tonight seemed to be especially guitar heavy with lots of shreddy-style solos from Gregg Belisle-Chi, and of course Rainey was sublime.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #jazz #timberne

  29. Tonight: hard for me to fathom I've been stanning Reid Anderson for 22 years. Easily one of my favorite composers of the century. The Bad Plus bassist brings the same keen ear and thoughtfulness to his electronica side project Slow Reactors with Gregg Belisle-Chi (second time this week) and Tina Priceman. Sounded seriously awesome at Threes Brewing.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #reidanderson #electronica

  30. Tonight: the best distraction... Tim Berne with his core unit (Belisle-Chi + Rainey) doing their semi-usual thing at Lowlands. No big name guests, so a tidy intimate crowd.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #jazz #timberne

  31. #Gowanus: time for anti - #ElonMusk protest outside #Tesla very good but why are these gatherings of, by and for #ParkSlope parents and #children hello #GenZ and #millennials why aren't you here? Is fighting #fascism at home somehow not considered cause du jour? Very perplexing

  32. Tonight: wild-eyed free form fitting the day's mood. Tim Berne in his usual spot at Lowlands, tonight with a banger of a band: Nels f'in Cline, Elias Stemeseder, and Tom f'in Rainey. Taking things very very deep at Lowlands on a snowy Thursday night. Also Bill Frisell is here and that makes me happy.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #jazz #timberne #nelscline

  33. Tonight: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Back to Lowlands for some freejazz boondoggle with Tim Berne, Gregg Belisle-Chi and the incomparable Tom Rainey.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #jazz #timberne

  34. Tonight: maybe people finally figured out you can catch A+ jazz in the intimate Lowlands Bar for the cost of whatever you want... Usually pretty empty for Tim Berne + Co, but packed tonight. Might be because Chris Potter is in the band. Dude is everywhere, and aren't we better for it? Also with usual suspects Gregg Belisle-Chi, Tom Rainey, John Hebert. Sounds A+, of course.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #jazz #gowanus #timberne #freejazz #chrispotter #saxophone

  35. Tonight: first stop = another Tuesday night with Tim Berne at Lowlands Bar, not here every week anymore, but when he is... An absolute treat. With Gregg Belisle-Chi, John Hebert and Tim Angulo. Getting there.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #jazz #timberne

  36. (3/3) The Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. I recommend you cancel the class swimming trip that you scheduled here.

Seriously, this is from 2011, right after the canal was named as a Superfund site. It would never have been filthier. Gowanus must be highly desirable Brooklyn real estate since it's a charming ex-industrial area with waterfront, so I have to think financial forces will result in a thorough cleanup.

  37. Tonight: been almost 2 weeks since last proper show and I have to say, I've been cranky about it. So happy to be in a happy place, Tim Berne in his irregular regular thing at Lowlands. Free jazz never sounds quite as focused as when Berne is at the helm at Lowlands. With the masterful Tom Rainey on drums don't hurt. Plus Gregg Belisle-Chi and John Hebert.

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #jazz #gowanus #timberne #freejazz

  38. Tonight:

Brain/body: you should stay stay in and rest for the week ahead

Me: stroll down to Gowanus for a Tim Berne set. With Gregg Belisle-Chi, John Hebert, Tom Rainey at Lowlands. Don't worry brain, it'll be over early, promise

    #nycfreaks #livemusic #brooklyn #gowanus #jazz #timberne

  39. Tonight: Ches Smith's New Quartet trying out some new material before heading into the studio. A two-guitar ensemble with Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman plus Nick Dunston on bass. Wild set of compositions nearly bordering on the overly-complicated with high-level interplay and occasional mayhem. Good shit at iBeam in BK.

  40. An old warehouse in Gowanus, Brooklyn. It’s been awhile, this is probably luxury housing now! I don’t recall the exact location.

  41. Blinded by Headlights Dialogue

    thenewleafjournal.com/justin-a

A dialogue addressing the question of why drivers refuse to dim their extraordinarily bright headlights.
