  1. Just had to say goodbye to a colleague who's had a profound impact on my life over the past five and a half years. It's sad to see him go, but there comes a time for everyone where they have to move on. At least these days with social media, we'll stay connected and still see each others' faces in our feeds from time to time, even if we don't actually *interact* with each other. #goodbyes #MovingOn

  2. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

If that is something you'd like, of course.

  3. Today we’re having a goodbye party for our dear Rocky, who is 18 1/2 years old. He has told us he’s ready, and we make an appointment with our vet to come to the house. Yesterday was cold, but there was no wind and the sun was out. We took the dogs for a walk. Rocky is the one in the stroller, although he did walk for about 15 minutes. #Dogs #Poodles #goodbyes #DogsOfMastodon

  4. Today, Tomorrow, and Yesterday

It has been a good year.

This weekend has been spent in the din of three guitars going at once and quiet conversations around a dying fire, familiar faces in the flickering shadows of the coals. And throughout all in the background has been the incessant crackling of the power lines.

I stepped outside today and stood out on the hill, the electric tower rising up behind me. The wind blew in my hair, and I relaxed in the friendly hum above. The lines stretched far away until I lost them amidst the trees and hills. I marveled at the power and progress of humankind and yet knew that when these lines cease crackling, the birds (the whippoorwill last night), the trees, and these hills will still remain.

    I thought about the year.
I found three spent shells from a past hunting expedition. I placed one in a cleft within the tower. The other I flung to the sky, and it went whistling off down the hill. The final one I placed in my pocket.

    I say good-bye to myself,
    and hello again.
Then I walk back to the cabin and my friends.
