¿Sabían que las Pirámides de Giza no siempre tuvieron ese color café de piedra vieja que vemos hoy en los videos y fotos de internet?
Cuando se terminaron de construir hace más de 4500 años, la Gran Pirámide del faraón Keops y sus compañeras estaban totalmente cubiertas por unas placas pulidas de piedra caliza blanca de gran calidad que traían en barcos desde las canteras de Tura. Estas piedras exteriores estaban tan bien cuidadas y recortadas que la superficie del monumento quedaba completamente lisa y brillaba con fuerza bajo el sol del desierto, haciendo que las estructuras se vieran de un color blanco brillante desde muchos kilómetros de distancia.
Lamentablemente, casi todo este revestimiento liso se perdió con el paso del tiempo. Hace unos 700 años, un fuerte terremoto sacudió la región y aflojó gran parte de estas piedras exteriores, lo que aprovecharon los habitantes de la zona durante los siglos siguientes para quitarlas y usarlas como material para construir casas, mezquitas y palacios en la ciudad de El Cairo. Hoy en día solo podemos ver una pequeña parte de este acabado original en la punta de la Pirámide de Kefrén, lo que nos da una pista de lo diferente que se veía el paisaje en el antiguo Egipto.
