before, people used the caves, so they kept them clean, it is important that people continue to come inside the caves, to create a link and keep them clean.
there are conical karst formation in motobu but not elsewhere in okinawa → why.
the limestone in motobu is *way* older than the new ryukyu limestone. it is very compact and not very permeable. the new ryukyu limestone is full of holes and not strong enough to form cones.
and that's the end ! -

what should we do to protect bats, is it possible to have them come back?
in okinawa it is possible, it is important to keep the forests around the caves.
how can we protect the caves ? for caves, the river is important, don't throw dirty water in rivers or in caves. with the agriculture, the red earth flows in caves instead of clean water and 「kills」 the caves.
especially in Matsuda dirty water disposal is a main problem. -

there are 2 types of bats in Matsuda, how many in okinawa? and why don't they all come to Matsuda?
in okinawa, 2 types, in yaeyama and amami, one of the type is different.
there are also 2 bats that are not in caves, and in yonaguni, there is a bat who lives in houses.
the large ryukyu bats that are everywhere in okinawa are very surprising for japanese tourists.
there are many caves in okinawa that have once been underwater it's just that they have not been surveyed by geologistsyet. -

#Ginoza second question: children go in caves and take animals. are those animals endangered and how can we prevent their extinction ?
education is important, and it is important not to teach them insects are frightful and disgusting and it's ok to kill them. also, it is important to keep forests in villages, gardens, and keep insects close to people.
also it is important to protect the water sources. -

there are a lot of strange formations and we don't know how they were created.
this is the end of the conference.
questions time
first about tuutiikun, who is a god of abundance, linked to agriculture, who was first in one of the caves before he was moved to the kami-yaa → when did he come from china?
he was in a hole on a terrace in mee-gaa. there are very old chinese ceram found in Ginoza, but the place where tuutiikun was located has not been excavated so we can't know the date yet. -

there is very little ryukyu limestone north of Ginoza.
there are 8 caves in Ginoza. there used to be more probably but the limestone melted and disappeared.
Matsuda is the only cave longer than 1000m in north okinawa.
the caves have very particular stone formations, some unique in japan.
there was a time the cave were underwater. for probably 10000 years.
it creates very particular stone formations. -

ryukyu limestone is *very*young compared to limestone in japan. the ryukyu limestone is called 「tropical karst」even if we're in the subtropical zone.
ryukyu karst, located at the limit between continent and ocean is very particular.
okinawa is the prefecture in japan with the most of limestone.
there is submarine karst landscape. -

he shows us many photographs of limestone landscapes in the world.
he works a lot with the nhk.
the ryukyu karst, located at a place where plates collide and the archipel is lifted, where temperatures are high, there's a monsoon.
because of the reefs, new limestones are born, immediately eaten by abundant rains.
he now talks about places with limestone in japan that seem to be very famous because he doesn't say where they are, since everyone knows. except me, no idea. -

when you look at the world map, there's no much karst, that's because animals with shells that can make karst are recent: in old landscape, there's no karst.
i think he means limestone, but my geology is poor and he's a geology professor so he's probably right.
karst landscapes don't have valley, they have doline. with water underground.
caves are dug from the top to the bottom, then they collapse, and then they make stalagmites and stalactites. -

#Ginoza next is 「characteristics of the caves of Ginoza as seen from karst formations all over the world」by Kensaku Urata of Kyushu University. he's been working on the caves in Ginoza since 2020.
1. what is karst
2. karst of the world
3. characteristics of ryukyu karst
4. characteristics of Ginoza's caves.there are some stones that are easy to grind and some that are easy to melt. karst melts.
grindy stones make valleys, melting stones don't. -

#Ginoza all the ones in okinawa gather in one cave in the south to have babies and then go back to all their caves.
the other type also live and have babies in different caves. if something happens to the baby-cave, the bats won't have babies anymore and the
colony will disappear. -

we don't know why they are so few.
most are animals who go both inside and outside of the caves such as bats.
the fishes too are not species that only exist in caves, they just live both inside or outside.
there are also a lot of frogs that just fell in the cave.
in matsuda cave, many animals get out at night.
there are a lot of insect and spiders.
and of course the bats. two species, one that can be found in all of the ryukyu islands, very small and cute. -

next is hisao tamura about the animals found in Matsuda limestone cave.
most of the animals living in caves are specially adapted to caves (darkness, narrow spaces, high temperatures, not much to eat…)
some live forever in caves, some can enter caves but also live outside, some just got lost/ brought there by the river…
in okinawa, there are very few of the first type that live forever in caves. (apparently only 3, incl. two types of ants) -

#Ginoza the inhabitants searched the cave and found a giant snake who ate people. an old lady told them to go and fdtch a priest from shuri. the priest killed the snake with thunder. there is a kami-yaa, a sacred place, dedicated to this priest in the village too. the kami-yaa is for the priest, the god of the utaki, the ancestors of the hokama house (where the kami-yaa is) and tuutiikun.

#Ginoza utaki are often on the northern side of the village, *actually* protecting the village from the north wind.
the house at the foot of the utaki is called niibuya. an ancestor of this family was an educator for the kin udun family of shuri. it is said it is why people in matsuda had access to culture.
the house was given the right to have great stone walls by shuri.
mee-gaa cave legend: an elder sister went to get water to mee-gaa but disappeared. -

#Ginoza there are layers as old as the kaizuka period.
mee-gaa cave, also a part of matsuda cave, is easily accessible. apparently they found something great inside that they will announce later. they excavated it too, they found 13th century chinese porcelain. they also found a smithy, tubes to send air to the hearth *made of stone*
the forest by the cave is kushi-utaki, a sacred place still in use. -

#Ginoza the museum director Tasato will first talk about the Matsuda Cave through photographs and drawings (kami-shibai)
light does not enter inside Matsuda Cave, the bottom is occupied by a river (quite a lot of water)
the cave is quite young and still active, growing small white concretions.
it shelters a lot of animals that are rare and protected species. it takes about 1 hour to go on the other side and get out. this other entrance is called kushi-baka and was excavated, -

#Ginoza i arrived early and was the first inside, but it is not filling up really much. i suppose there are less geology fans than archaeology fans in okinawa.
there are a few of the people who were in nago this morning though 😁 -

and i'm now in #GaramanHall in #Ginoza for a lecture about the limestone caves of Ginoza. now, that's a great spectacle room for such a small village, seems they know where it is important to put the inhabitants' tax money.
the hashtag for this lecture will be #Ginoza. as always, mute it if you hate geology. 😁 -
