Yes, Trakl. In 1981 the East German poet Franz Fühmann published an edition of Trakl's poems, along with an extended interpretative essay that filled an entire second volume. The essay was deeply autobiographical, as dark and as moving as Trakl's poems. I, a searching young student, attended a reading by Fühmann in a West Berlin bookshop. A deeply personal encounter that changed the way I approach poems (and poets, and life).

Oh, if only man would finally come
to this place in his entirety,
where he no longer would endure
that his heart beats, that his soul
is a fire that consumes him, where he no longer would be,
that he would dissolve into the night and all
things would grow immense and all
stars would resound in his ears,
until he would be like God and feel nothing more
than the ecstasy of creation -
Oh, if only he would finally come!
