Yes, Trakl. In 1981 the East German poet Franz Fühmann published an edition of Trakl's poems, along with an extended interpretative essay that filled an entire second volume. The essay was deeply autobiographical, as dark and as moving as Trakl's poems. I, a searching young student, attended a reading by Fühmann in a West Berlin bookshop. A deeply personal encounter that changed the way I approach poems (and poets, and life).
