Endlich komme ich dazu, meinen #GenXRant abzuladen. Seit letztem Wochenende habe ich allen Glauben an die Jugend von heute verloren. Wir waren in Deutschland, bei Freunden, alles Gen X in den besten Jahren, mittlerweile halt arriviert im schicken Altbau bzw. Haus mit Garten. Nach der 3., 4. Flasche Wein erzählen wir uns vom Krieg – also wie wir #damals, in der 1. Hälfte der 1990er jeweils Freitagabend bis Sonntagmorgen, meist mithilfe chemischer „Zusatzstoffe“, in irgendwelchen ranzigen Kellern oder Fabrikhallen durchgetanzt hatten, um dann am Sonntagnachmittag auf einer komischen After-Party wieder runterzukommen. Plötzlich meinte mein Freund, sein Ältester hätte gerade sein Studium beendet und sei noch nie auf einem Konzert gewesen, geschweige denn irgendwie Party gemacht … Leute, wir verlieren da gerade eine ganze Generation! Wollte ich noch loswerden.

Looking at current data and projections, this is the case not only in the US.

So, are we fu*ked? My answer is the most typical #GenX word (according to Google Ngram):

Meh!

There is, after all, a reason for the fact, that “psychological studies have confirmed: Gen Xers are reluctant to be corporate drones, placing more emphasis on work-life balance and autonomy”.

Innenansichten eines College-Dozenten (für Philosophie) in den USA:

* Most of our students are functionally illiterate. This is not a joke. By “functionally illiterate” I mean “unable to read and comprehend adult novels by people like Barbara Kingsolver, Colson Whitehead, and Richard Powers.”
* Their writing skills are at the 8th-grade level. Spelling is atrocious, grammar is random, and the correct use of apostrophes is cause for celebration. Worse is the resistance to original thought.
* Chronic absenteeism.
* Disappearing students. Students routinely just vanish at some point during the semester. They don’t officially drop or withdraw from the course, they simply quit coming.
* They can’t sit in a seat for 50 minutes. Students routinely get up during a 50 minute class, sometimes just 15 minutes in, and leave the classroom.
