An observation:

when K2 wore a blue jacket, blue pants, and a white-pink-purple hat, they were gendered female by strangers about 50 % of the time.

When K3 wears the identical outfit (literally the same clothes), they're always gendered male.

It can't be the hair, K3 has more than K2 had. But what is it?

In other "people are weird about gender" news, I was at a kids' stuff flea market today and rolled my eyes endlessly because nearly every vendor asked "you want size 110? For a boy or a girl?"

Folks. One kid likes firefighters, blue, pink, glitter, unicorns, excavators, and purple. The other likes yellow, dinosaurs, space, beetles, red, and rainbows.

I'm not sure how telling you their gender would help with finding clothes they like.

Vendor: yeah, that's right, a real boy needs a sword

Kid: *chooses turquoise shield with glittery pink unicorn on it*

Vendor: for your sister?

Kid: nope, she likes red and yellow, not pink like me!

Random kid on playground (to me): is that a boy or girl? He looks like... I can't tell

Me: why don't you just ask?

RK: are you a boy or a girl?

K2: a girl!

RK: really? You look more like a boy. Now, tell me again, are you a boy or a girl?

K2: a girl!

RK: But... (to me) is that true? You called him [name]?

Me: if someone says they're a girl, they're a girl, no other way of telling

Both: get a "you can't be serious?!" from the vendor

Me: is near overload and too tired for this and only says "yes"

Das klingt vielleicht alles etwas theoretisch bei einem 2-jährigen Kind, aber für mich ist das überhaupt nicht theoretisch.

Ich war das Kind.

Und ich bin der Mensch, der immer noch genervt und unangenehm berührt und etwas hilflos ist, wenn andere etwas von mir erwarten aufgrund der Gender-Identität, die sie bei mir (fälschlicherweise) vermuten.

Aber ich hätte das jahrzehntelang, selbst als erwachsene Person, nicht formulieren und diese falschen Zuschreibungen nicht zurückweisen können. Und im Alter von 2 Jahren ohnehin nicht.

Niemand will Kindern verbieten, mit Autos oder Puppen zu spielen, aber wenn euer Kind eines oder beides davon mag, dann verknüpft diese ganz individuelle Präferenz nicht mit der (vermuteten) Gender-Identität. Es trägt nichts bei. Es engt nur der Raum der Möglichkeiten für das Kind ein, und der ist oft schon eng genug (aus anderen Gründen).

In der Spielgruppe für Kleinkinder.

F., ein Kind von nicht mal 2 Jahren, spielt lebhaft mit Knete. Die anderen Kinder spielen auch lebhaft mit Knete.

Elternteil eines anderen Kindes: 'Das macht F., weil er ein Junge ist.'

Ich (denke): 'Wenn ihr es noch ungefähr fünftausend Mal sagt, wird F. nichts anderes übrig bleiben, als es zu glauben.'

Ich (sage): 'Ich glaube, dass F. das macht, weil es F. ist.'

Mir ist wirklich noch keine Situation untergekommen, in der 'Das machst/magst du, weil du ein Junge/Mädchen bist' etwas anderes als schädlich ist und von Blindheit für das Kind zeugt.

Und ich hasse es, dass es als 'links' oder 'woke' gilt, darauf hinzuweisen oder zumindest nicht still zu nicken. (Ich bin links und hoffentlich ein bisschen woke, aber das bedeutet für diejenigen, die das in Anführungszeichen setzen, was anderes als für mich.)

Person in "get fit after birth" course: as what do your older kids dress up for Fastnacht?

Me: a princess, and a ladybug

Person: I thought you had a boy and a girl?

Me (bracing): that's what we think, yes

Person: I've never heard about a boy dressing up as a ladybug

Me (thinking "wow, you're in for a surprise"): they didn't, actually

The kindergarten today sure looked like sensory hell: decorations, loud music, kids and staff in costumes (it's Fastnacht, and our region is INTO IT). I was close to overload after 20 minutes.

(I was in there for 20 minutes because the kids needed time to adjust, too. Plus I had to give the "yes, they're a boy and wearing a princess costume, because they like it. Everyone can dress up however they like" talk to two different kids 🙄)

K1: all the girls got a pink paper star in the Advent calendar from kindergarten, and all the boys a blue one - but why? Weird.

I just love that they still say "but why?" earnestly and still haven't internalized that gendered color-coding the world wants to force on them.
