From Sapporo there are a few different areas you can explore in a day/one night trip. I went to a few of them after finishing my language course. During the language course it felt like every weekend was already full with festivals and other activities or I was still exhausted for the week. So I had to catch up on them afterwards.
I went to Lake Toya, Biei/Furano and Upopoy National Ainu Museum. One trip I did make during my language course was a day trip to Otaru. I liked all of them and think that each one is worth it. More about them in the comments.

Spent 4 hours driving this morning, then spent another 3.5 battling the "beginner" runs at Furano, which caught me completely off guard. The gradients here would be an intermediate or advanced run in Australia!
Still, the snow is excellent, the views are amazing, and the ramen at the base of the mountain is delicious. I think an early night is in order tonight so I can be rested up for tomorrow.
