The Trump administration’s latest round of tariffs against billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods took effect just after midnight Saturday, after the two countries failed to seal a last-minute trade deal that satisfied both sides.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa would retaliate “dollar for dollar” after the White House delivered on its threat to impose crushing 50 per cent tariffs on a wide range of products. The two governments’ trade representatives said they had come close to finalizing an agreement in recent days, but Carney said Ottawa ultimately couldn’t accept the terms on the table.
“I have decided to suspend trade negotiations with the U.S. and have directed Canada’s negotiators to return to Ottawa,” the prime minister said in a statement.
“They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.” [….]
In his own statement, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said talks crumbled because Canada didn’t accept the agreement the administration had offered.
“Tonight, Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week, despite the U.S. offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days,” Greer said in a statement.
“In addition, Canada is continuing to maintain its prolonged retaliation against the United States, including, among other things, flat out prohibitions on certain American goods and services.”

United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told reporters that Canada had walked away from the negotiating table, minutes before a deadline ushering in new 50 percent tariffs by the Trump administration on a broad range of Canadian goods.

Pete Hegseth’s Pentagon on Friday fired the publisher and editor of the independent military news outlet Stars and Stripes for “insubordination.”
Long-time publisher Max Lederer and Editor-in-Chief Erik Slavin were given “separation notices” that allow five days to appeal the decision, CBS News reports. Reporter Lara Korte announced on social media that she had also been fired.
Korte and Slavin traced the decision back to interviews they did that aired on CBS Sunday Morning in July.“According to the notice, I am being fired for stating in a CBS interview that censorship of news for service members would constitute a red line. The Pentagon’s public affairs office has charged me with insubordination,” Slavin told CBS.
“I stand by the principle that Stars and Stripes must remain editorially independent, as required by law and by the department’s own policies.” [….]

“It’s a shame for the institution and service members, who swore to defend the Constitution and deserve the right to a free and independent press,” Korte wrote in a series of posts about her firing.
Although the newspaper operates within the Department of Defense, it is legally mandated by Congress to remain editorially independent.
Lederer had announced on Wednesday his intention to step down from the post he’s held since 2007, since his opinions on how to run the media organization differed in “fundamental ways” to the Pentagon’s plans for Stars and Stripes, the newspaper reported.“I think the right step is for me to step down, get out of the way, and let different leadership step in and continue to make this, the great organization that it is, even better,” he said.

President Donald Trump is now expanding his pressure campaign against Iran by threatening “tremendous economic consequences” on any country giving “any type of lifeline” to the nation. As the U.S. seeks to end the war, there is one potential target that stands alone to make a difference: China.

Former officials and analysts say it is likely the White House will attempt to squeeze Iran financially with additional secondary sanctions or penalties on Chinese entities that do business with Tehran.
The Treasury Department is scheduled to unveil the specifics of its plans to ramp up pressure on Iran on Monday. Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday, said the fresh measures would “squash” Iran’s ability to fund their military, and asserted that the U.S. is urging allies to choose a side in the war.
“If you insist on doing business with them, either transferring money, buying their oil, they are doing seaborne ship transfers, then the U.S. Treasury and the U.S. government, they will put its full might and force toward enforcing against you,” Bessent said. “We are going to have the toughest sanctions in history.”
He declined to say specifically whether the announcement would target China, arguing he prefers to keep certain discussions private. Still, Bessent warned Beijing: “It would do them a big service to get with the program.”
Given China’s economic ties to Iran, a new effort to put pressure on Beijing could reinvigorate a diplomatic push to end the war. Chinese diplomats have attempted to cool the temperature between Washington and Tehran before, contributing to an effort to broker a temporary ceasefire back in April.
China is by far Iran’s biggest purchaser of oil, accounting for some 90% of its exports. The consequences could be steep for the global economy if American officials choose to go after industries in China on a large scale or on a blanket basis.

Iran’s powerful parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the country’s main negotiator in mediated negotiations with the United States, said Washington appeared to have concluded it could not prevail in its direct military confrontation.
“We must make plans to deal with the unjust sanctions so that we can overcome them,” he said during a visit to neighbouring Iraq, accusing the U.S. and Israel of resorting to what he said was economic and “cognitive” warfare.

ICE’S NEW INVESTMENT—a purchase of thousands of electric-shock gloves—sounds like something out of a dystopian movie. And it turns out that the likely logic behind the purchase is disturbing.

According to an acquisition-planning form published by the Department of Homeland Security last week, ICE is purchasing what it calls “a Conductive Distraction and De-escalation Device.” In reality, they’re wearable tasers.
While immigration czar Tom Homan emphasizes that the gloves—cartoonishly called “Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters” or “G.L.O.V.E.s”—will reduce the need for ICE agents to use lethal violence, critics already suggest the move is actually more about optics and what agents can get away with.
More discreet than a taser or a gun, the gloves are ideal weapons for the age of social media video. There’s no swing, no jab—just the laying on of hands. Agents will be able to use the devices to shock whomever they deem “disorderly” with less risk of being the subject of the type of video that goes viral or results in messy lawsuits.
The weapon’s manufacturer calls it an “invisible partner.”
Compliant Technologies, the company that makes the gloves, pitches itself as an alternative to lethal violence. “By providing non-lethal alternatives, we aim to create a safer world for everyone involved,” the company’s website reads. “We believe this technology can lower liability, lessen risk, and create a more amiable atmosphere for the general population and those who protect and serve us.”
This peaceful image is undercut by the site’s visual of a powerful electric current flowing behind the gloves, looking like the aftereffect of Thor charging up in an Avengers movie.
Homan seems to agree with their de-escalatory claims. “It’s another device to help someone get compliant when they are not,” Homan told Fox & Friends last week. “You can’t just go from zero to one hundred, right, and the first thing you go for is lethal force.”
ICE’s planned purchase is between $10 million and $20 million, which, at the rate the Omaha Police Department1 was quoted by Compliant Technologies for the same model last year, could put well over 12,000 gloves in and on the hands of ICE agents.2
Jason Houser, who served as ICE chief of staff in the Biden administration and still maintains connections within DHS, told me he believes the gloves will be in use on the street before the end of the year, and agents will be using them in field training. A senior DHS official told NBC News they expect ICE to have the gloves in a little over a month.

Electricity has been out for 10 days throughout much of Gary, Ind., since deadly storms ripped through, knocking down trees and power lines. On Friday, residents said they were growing increasingly desperate, even as another round of rain was on the way.

The utility, Northern Indiana Public Service Co., said on Friday that 43,400 of its customers remain without power in the region, down from more than 300,000 in the storm’s immediate aftermath. Service is expected to be restored to Gary by Tuesday, the company said, calling it a “monumental undertaking.”
On Friday, Gov. Mike Braun said that he had requested an expedited major disaster declaration from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that would allow more assistance to pour into the state. The Treasury Department is scheduled to unveil the specifics of its plans to ramp up pressure on Iran on Monday. Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday, said the fresh measures would “squash” Iran’s ability to fund their military, and asserted that the U.S. is urging allies to choose a side in the war.
“If you insist on doing business with them, either transferring money, buying their oil, they are doing seaborne ship transfers, then the U.S. Treasury and the U.S. government, they will put its full might and force toward enforcing against you,” Bessent said. “We are going to have the toughest sanctions in history.”
He declined to say specifically whether the announcement would target China, arguing he prefers to keep certain discussions private. Still, Bessent warned Beijing: “It would do them a big service to get with the program.”
Given China’s economic ties to Iran, a new effort to put pressure on Beijing could reinvigorate a diplomatic push to end the war. Chinese diplomats have attempted to cool the temperature between Washington and Tehran before, contributing to an effort to broker a temporary ceasefire back in April.
China is by far Iran’s biggest purchaser of oil, accounting for some 90% of its exports. The consequences could be steep for the global economy if American officials choose to go after industries in China on a large scale or on a blanket basis.

“We must make plans to deal with the unjust sanctions so that we can overcome them,” he said during a visit to neighbouring Iraq, accusing the U.S. and Israel of resorting to what he said was economic and “cognitive” warfare.

ICE’S NEW INVESTMENT—a purchase of thousands of electric-shock gloves—sounds like something out of a dystopian movie. And it turns out that the likely logic behind the purchase is disturbing.

According to an acquisition-planning form published by the Department of Homeland Security last week, ICE is purchasing what it calls “a Conductive Distraction and De-escalation Device.” In reality, they’re wearable tasers.
While immigration czar Tom Homan emphasizes that the gloves—cartoonishly called “Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters” or “G.L.O.V.E.s”—will reduce the need for ICE agents to use lethal violence, critics already suggest the move is actually more about optics and what agents can get away with.
More discreet than a taser or a gun, the gloves are ideal weapons for the age of social media video. There’s no swing, no jab—just the laying on of hands. Agents will be able to use the devices to shock whomever they deem “disorderly” with less risk of being the subject of the type of video that goes viral or results in messy lawsuits.
The weapon’s manufacturer calls it an “invisible partner.”
Compliant Technologies, the company that makes the gloves, pitches itself as an alternative to lethal violence. “By providing non-lethal alternatives, we aim to create a safer world for everyone involved,” the company’s website reads. “We believe this technology can lower liability, lessen risk, and create a more amiable atmosphere for the general population and those who protect and serve us.”
This peaceful image is undercut by the site’s visual of a powerful electric current flowing behind the gloves, looking like the aftereffect of Thor charging up in an Avengers movie.
Homan seems to agree with their de-escalatory claims. “It’s another device to help someone get compliant when they are not,” Homan told Fox & Friends last week. “You can’t just go from zero to one hundred, right, and the first thing you go for is lethal force.”
ICE’s planned purchase is between $10 million and $20 million, which, at the rate the Omaha Police Department1 was quoted by Compliant Technologies for the same model last year, could put well over 12,000 gloves in and on the hands of ICE agents.2
Jason Houser, who served as ICE chief of staff in the Biden administration and still maintains connections within DHS, told me he believes the gloves will be in use on the street before the end of the year, and agents will be using them in field training. A senior DHS official told NBC News they expect ICE to have the gloves in a little over a month.

Grocery shelves have been empty for days. Children who had just started school haven’t seen their classrooms in more than a week. Insulin has spoiled in warm refrigerators, and people who depend on oxygen cannot pump it from their tanks.
Electricity has been out for 10 days throughout much of Gary, Ind., since deadly storms ripped through, knocking down trees and power lines. On Friday, residents said they were growing increasingly desperate, even as another round of rain was on the way.

Storms on Aug. 11 caused flooding and havoc throughout the Chicago area and neighboring northern Indiana, hitting Gary, where one-third of residents live in poverty, especially hard. More than a week later, the regional power company said its crews were working tirelessly to restore electricity but were overwhelmed by unprecedented levels of damage.
The utility, Northern Indiana Public Service Co., said on Friday that 43,400 of its customers remain without power in the region, down from more than 300,000 in the storm’s immediate aftermath. Service is expected to be restored to Gary by Tuesday, the company said, calling it a “monumental undertaking.”
On Friday, Gov. Mike Braun said that he had requested an expedited major disaster declaration from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that would allow more assistance to pour into the state. Last week, President Trump granted an emergency declaration for Indiana counties affected by the disaster, and a state relief fund is providing emergency aid grants of as much as $5,000.
“I will do everything in my power to ensure Hoosiers have the resources needed to recover,” said Mr. Braun, a Republican.
Local officials warned that cleanup would likely take months.
“It’s just widespread devastation throughout the city of Gary,” said Larry E. Tillman, the chief of the fire department.
