@jk lol yes. You never installed a linux distro since there is no such thing. It's an unfortunate marketing term that caught on. You installed distros about 1-5% of which was a Linux kernel. Since you seem unwilling or unable to identify those distros and the kernel version they ran I can't help you. Each distro is made for a purpose and a set of needs.

#FreeDesktops in particular have seen very impressive incremental development and improvements since 2005. Install easier than win/osx.

@jk then use osx or windows. My systems all work. Upgraded routinely

1. 2006 - debian sid 32 bit crossgraded to 64 bit and testing

2. 2008? Debian 32 bit testing reinstalled root 2012 64 bit.

3. 2015? Debian 64 bit sid sitched to testing a few years later

Plus servers running remotely.

When you want something to be what it's not you're never going to be content.

#FreeDesktops and #FreeServers are how they are because that's how people who do the work want them. Free as in Freedom.

@tasket @dusk @jk if you want one and only one desktop then windows and osx are waiting for you. Having choices is the entire point of #FreeDesktops. If you are looking for windows then just use windows, but don't complain when Microsoft makes a change you don't like, you got what you wanted.

I think the main thing to realize when you start typing "linux should be more like windows" is to stop and realize we already have managed proprietary operating systems. I hate android for example. Cludgy.

I'm sympathetic to the idea that we shouldn't expect end users to choose their own OS. I am completely unsympathetic to the idea that we shouldn't expect organizations - including businesses, nonprofits, and universities - to protect their customers' data by not using Windows, when Windows is becoming spyware.

@[email protected] I was a member of a small team that managed to solve issues users hit but it took huge amount of work plus distro made some poor choices but was very popular while it lasted. #inxi is what remains active from that experience. Still same goals: trying to smooth bumps users of #FreeDesktops and #FreeServers might hit, help users, distro support people, sys admins.

People fail to grasp "Linux" is not a single OS/app vendor, keep looking for a "they" to fix things
