Maybe I'm missing the point, but why a fork, instead of implementing these features, and push them upstream? If then the main mastodon maintainer isn't cooperative, you can still easily use your code as a fork. Thats pretty much the same effort, but less drama, and probably a better result, because then all mastodon admins will get these features.

  2. :boost_love: Boost if you think groups like @NGIZero and others should band together and fund a hard fork of #Mastodon that prioritizes trust and safety, and the needs of #Fediverse admins to protect their users from abuse.

⭐ Favorite if you would support with a little money, too.

  4. So, since #Florence (#ForkTogether) is finally happening, I think the people that worked for our temporarily named Mastofork initiative should help this project instead.

I don’t want to compete; I want us to work together and make a successful community-run fork of Mastodon that strives at empowering people.

    Let’s make something great!

  5. Hm, es scheint unter #ForkTogether, bzw. jetzt #Florence einen Mastodon-Fork mit erweiterten Moderationsmöglichkeiten zu geben. Find ich jetzt so mittelgut, wieso gleich forken?

  6. @maloki oh, how exciting! good to hear from #forktogether! I wish you all the success with rebooting!

  7. @sandrockcstm @hache I wrote pnathan.com/blog/mastodon/2018 back in August as a friendly push to the #ForkTogether crew to think very hard about the coordination costs that being incurred here as a society.

This all loops right back to what I originally envisioned when showing interest in #ForkTogether - ActivityPub, in and of itself, is not *enough*. We're already seeing interoperability concerns around basic things like 'how to handle/identify DMs' between otherwise federated, AP-compatible systems.

We need a working specification that defines things above and beyond ActivityPub, that we can agree and work on independently of a specific software project.
