20 years ago, a reader of my ex-ezine column emailed me about a Toronto Star food story. She said I would've done a better job of it and asked why I stopped writing. One reason why I started Confessions of a Cardamom Addict.
Total coincidence: I'm working on a story on that same topic, slotted three days before Cardamom Addict's 20th anniversary.

Day 21 of 30 Days of Local Food:
Vive la patty resistance! This week's CBCKW food column celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Patty Wars and the deliciousness that is the Jamaican patty. PLUS I chatted with the AWESOME Rochelle Williams, The Dessert Artist, about her fantastically flaky finds.

Food traditions brought here are an important part of local food. Last week's food column about S Korean and Vietnamese Lunar New Year, and local restaurateurs talking about their traditions is a good example! You can listen to it here:

A day late (apologies-- Casa de Cardamom is going through a rut of plumbing problems this weekend).
If you've ever wanted to write a cookbook or save your recipes for future generations, I've got some pretty awesome advice from experienced hands!

For my first food column of 2025, I decided to tackle many people’s New Year’s resolution of starting a food-based business in Waterloo-Wellington. From public health to business plans to networking, there’s lots of prepwork needed before you crack your first egg.

Teresa Finney is a baker/bakery owner who also writes a newsletter, At Heart Panadería. They recently published their first cookbook zine. I liked this short essay a lot, wherein she reflects on that process.
"Realizing (and Paying for) a Zine Dream"

It's Latin Heritage Month and to mark it, Chef Denis Hernandez of Casa de Sabor took me on a pantry shop for Salvadoran ingredients at Kitchener's Rincon Latino! Talked about it yesterday on-air. So, here's my CBCKW article.

These routes are made for walkin'...and eatin'. And that's just what you'll do...
...on these local food walking tours. My latest CBCKW food column is all about exploring the edible and sippable spots on guided tours.
Be sure to wear your walking shoes and eating pants. 😋

Why yes, being a food writer means I get to go to Stratford, ON for a story.
And why yes, that means I got to get my favourite choccies from Derek.
And why no, I don't know how two disappeared after these pics were snapped.

My latest food column for CBC-KW is up! This time, it's about sober summer sipping.
Whether you're taking a sober break, saving the buzz for the weekend, or just wanting to be able to drive home safely, there are better and tastier zero-proof options than juice and pops :)

When I saw a gorgeous knife in the hands of a local chef, I had to ask about it.
Turns out it was a custom-forged knife made by Tom Stegner, a knifesmith here in Kitchener! Needless to say, you *know* I wanted to talk (and write) about him for my CBCKW Food column ☺️
And I got knife tips (😉) for the home cook, from Conestoga College's Sean Duffy :)

My latest food column for CBC-KW is up!
It's the new year in many parts of India, Southeast Asia and Yunnan, China. This week, my column is about how Pi Mai is celebrated in Laos an Puthandu is celebrated by Tamils in Tamil Nadu India.
Lots of lucky and tasty food, too :)

My draft is drafted! They're not the greatest words, but they're down! And fixable! And I'm not hideously over my word count!
I shall celebrate with ice cream.
Okay, I already had ice cream.
Maybe I shall get *more* ice cream.

This New York Times guest essay on how social media influencers exploit restaurants for free meals makes me think back to an earlier era when I was a food writer in D.C. more than a decade ago and certain upstart blogger-influencers used similar tactics to extract free stuff. Their writing and insights were often superficial and their brand-building presence at food-media events sucked up all the oxygen in the room.

“She loved to drink, on doctor’s orders of course, and would sit for hours absorbing whiskey-and-soda and Al’s talk. He was wonderful with her; he would start with palmistry, and without her knowing it end with Das Kapital.”

it may sound cheezy, but today's my favourite day of my restaurant reviewing year.
Today, I called and texted the restaurants that I'm listing in my year-end column.
It was a super-tough year, with so many owners crying while chatting about the business.
I don't hold any airs -- I don't pretend to make/break restos or be a taste maker - but I know it's a bit of an emotional boost for them, that can translate into a bit of extra traffic.
-
Alas, Covid has put my restaurant adventures on hold, so I don't have a review to share.
But my latest World of Food column for Grand Magazine is online (WOF is the intersection of immigration, memory, & food, as I talk to people who've made the area their home).
This time, I write about the family behind Azores Bakery (and they share a recipe for bacalhau a bras (num)
