98% of Fonterra shareholders voted to sell the goose which laid the golden eggs and today is pay day. The average *tax-free* payment to shareholders is $400k.
Farmers voted for the sugar hit, disregarding the fact that the next time the milk price drops, Fonterra's consumer brands won't be there to cushion the shock because they're now owned by French company Lactalis.
Short term thinking is not much of a strategy.
If anyone knows why this sale of business assets for profit isn't taxed, I'd love to hear from you.

BOOM!
Greenpeace Aotearoa has won its greenwashing case against Fonterra.
Fonterra — NZ’s biggest polluter — was found to have broken the law with misleading butter packaging falsely claiming its Anchor Butter was ‘100% New Zealand Grass-Fed’.

BREAKING
Greenpeace has upset Fonterra’s Shareholders’ Fund meeting at the dairy giant’s Auckland HQ, establishing a ‘nitrate emergency quarantine zone’ around the building and ‘returning’ 2000 litres of river slime at the entrances. -
"In 2024, Fonterra reported that emissions from its New Zealand dairy farms were 20 percent higher per kilo of milk than their Australian counterparts. This challenges the common refrain that New Zealand produces the world’s lowest carbon dairy."

CW: Not nzpol. Just Winston stirring up Fonterra
I'm reluctant to agree with Winston on many fronts, but this I do.
Shareholders, it's in their court to stop this idiotic sale your wise board has set up.
Don't come crying for sympathy in future when things go pear shape.

Sam Stubbs writing in the Sunday Star Times thinks the decision is short sighted. He argues that the value added parts of the business provided stability when milk prices fluctuate. Adding value is where the money is, but Fonterra has recast itself as just another producer of cheap milk.

This is huge.
And very bad news for big dairy buyers like Nestlé, MARS and Danone which all have Zero Deforestation policies.

Fonterra are making a big deal about decarbonising their Clandeboye plant. They plan to replace coal burners with wood pellets.
The plant opened less than ten years ago amidst pressure from local activists NOT to choose coal burners, but they did it anyway.
Then the Labour government gave Fonterra $90m for initiatives to halve their use of coal. The plant conversion will cost $64m.
And Fonterra can *claim* they've reduced emissions.

We're calling on Fonterra investors to stop for a minute and consider the big picture. Palm kernel is a product of the palm oil industry, a key driver of rainforest deforestation in Southeast Asia, and responsible for human rights abuses and the destruction of rare wildlife habitats.

So farewell, Mainland cheese. I wonder what the two old guys in the ads would've thought about this?
Fonterra is ditching its consumer brands to concentrate on what they do best -- producing cheap milk powder for China and polluting our waterways.
The sale, which includes Anchor and several other brands, is likely to produce $2.5-3.0b and Fonterra are promising a cash handout to shareholders.

Fonterra are trying to blatantly greenwash their image. They're claiming that NZ's over-stocked, over-fertilised, palm kernel-fueled dairy industry is somehow "regenerative agriculture".
They're falsely co-opting the term from those farmers who are already practicing genuine regenerative farming philosophy. Farah Hancock explains the difference.

This has HUGE implications for New Zealand. A large proportion of our emissions is methane from the dairy industry.
How methane emissions are pushing the Amazon towards catastrophe — and how ending methane emissions is our best chance of averting the worst impacts of the climate crisis.

In Australia, the food industry also exhibits significant levels of concentration, though perhaps not as extreme as in the U.S.Here's a general overview:
1. Supermarket Sector:
The Australian grocery market is highly concentrated, with two major players, #Woolworths and #Coles, dominating about 65-70% of the market. Aldi and IGA (Independent Grocers of Australia) hold smaller shares, but the landscape is still largely controlled by the #duopoly of Woolworths and Coles. This concentration can limit competition and contribute to higher prices for consumers.2. Meat Processing:
The Australian meat processing industry is also fairly concentrated, with a few large companies like JBS Australia, Teys Australia, and Australian Country Choice controlling a significant share of #beef processing. This concentration can lead to less competition and potentially higher prices for meat products.3. #Agricultural Inputs (Seeds, Fertilisers):
The agricultural inputs sector in Australia, like seeds and fertilisers, is controlled by a few major players. Companies such as Bayer (which acquired #Monsanto) have a significant share of the seed market, while companies like Incitec Pivot and Nutrien dominate fertiliser production. This concentration can lead to reduced competition and potentially higher costs for #farmers, which may be passed on to consumers.4 #Dairy Industry:
The dairy processing industry in Australia is also dominated by a few large companies like #Fonterra, #Saputo, and Bega Cheese. This concentration can impact #milk prices both for producers and consumers. In summary, Australia has similar issues with market concentration in the food industry, though the levels vary by sector. This concentration can lead to reduced competition, which often results in higher prices for consumers. The dominance of a few major players across various sectors makes it challenging to achieve more competitive pricing, ultimately affecting the cost of food in Australia.

Of course, Fonterra is delaying its scope 3 emissions reduction goals, let alone the plan to achieve them.
This is why we need the Government to regulate industry, to force them to make the emissions cuts that we require.
