Anthony Ashley Cooper led the evangelical movement in the CoE. He studied London hospital records and found a correlation between sanitation and prevalence of vice.
When some Christians imagine this correlation, they’d wall themselves off from “dirty” areas— 45 referred to whole peoples this way. In contrast, a leader to restore biblical orthodoxy to 19thc England wanted to clean up London.

George Phillips, #Puritan, on the rich man in Luke 16:19-31. “Graceless” persons presume that the needy are naughty. Which would make Jesus, with nowhere to lay his head, one of the naughty, as well.
There’s a link between receiving (spiritual) grace and demonstrating (physical) grace to the needy here.
Today, would we reserve the label of “graceless” for those who would urge a better care for the needy?
How can you exhibit grace?

William Garden Blaikie, Scottish Church moderator. It’s “suitable employment” of a minister to teach what Christianity has to do with the workplace, from both pulpit and press. Masters and servants must seek each other’s interest.
Some may find one offensive. They’d want the church silent on one, which is to reinforce 24x7 the other.
Can we call workers to steward company assets? Rich to stop exploiting all the time?
