A vessel coming from Russia dragged its anchor before a subsea cable was damaged.
The anchor of a vessel that damaged an undersea cable linking Helsinki and the Estonian capital Tallinn dragged along the seabed “at least several tens of kilometres” before it hit the line, Finnish police said Sunday.
On 31 December police detained the Fitburg, a 132-metre-long cargo ship en route from St. Petersburg.

Finnland steht einst im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit aufgrund eines Vorfalls in der Ostsee, bei dem es um Schäden an unterseeischen Kommunikationskabeln zwischen Tallinn und Helsinki ging. Der finnische Grenzschutz hat Videoaufnahmen veröffentlicht, die das Einsteigen und die Inhaftierung des Schiffes Fitburg zeigen, das von St. Petersburg und steht im Verdacht, an der jüngsten Störung der kritischen Infrastruktur beteiligt zu sein. Das geschah am Morgen des 31. Dezember. Der Vorfall verstärkt die Besorgnis der nordeuropäischen Länder hinsichtlich der Sicherheit von Unterwassernetzen in der Region, insbesondere nach früheren Fällen von Schäden an Kabeln und Pipelines in der Ostsee. Dabei wird nicht nur auf die technischen Ursachen des Unfalls, sondern auch auf die Zusammensetzung der Besatzung und die Strecke des Schiffes geachtet. Während die Ermittlungen laufen, hat der Fall bereits eine internationale Dimension angenommen.Derzeit wurden zwei Besatzungsmitglieder wegen des Verdachts der Beteiligung an dem Kabelschaden festgenommen, während zwei anderen Seeleuten verboten wurde, finnisches Territorium zu verlassen.
