Also, for those interested, Valentina Tereshkova is still alive. She's 88.
-
@diazona I would take her invasion any day over the moon creatures.
-
@blogdiva It is an allegory, but as I've said, we know what Wells wanted us to believe (in my opinion), and it's not good.
-
@strangefour Technically, yes. And then, they swam to shore.
-
@Louisa I was wondering this, too. It looked very much like a Grey, which Wells wouldn't have had any knowledge of, so I suppose that was artistic license of the film producers/director.
-
@diazona I missed having a lot of the squares you have, or they weren't arranged well, when I did have them, so I didn't get a bingo this week.
-
@Zerofactorial Narrator: "They are humans, and therefore, they never learn."
-
Wells may have been on to something about a relationship between colonialism and spreading disease.
-
@moira I didn't hate the moon creatures.
-
Lots of Victorian-era fiction was man vs. nature / the wild / the unknown, with strong focus on man being the overcomer and victorious, destroying the other in the process.
Wells is no exception.

So, I think Wells would have us side with Bedford on this, but I'm siding with Cavor.
-
OMG. Bedford is almost giddy when he says, "He did have such a terrible cold."
You just genocided an entire civilization, just like the indigenous peoples of the Americas, and you don't even care.
-
"They're being hauled up on nylon ropes!"
I'm so glad they were nylon. If they were hemp, I would have been worried.
-
Tell me of the wars of your homeworld, Usul.
-
Haha! One day he'll explain.
-
Cavor is too British, for his own good.
-
"Oh, all right. I suppose I'll help you escape, even though you're the absolute worst." —Cavor
-
I just want to reiterate this: https://don.monster/@ramsey/114373602701208070
-
-
Bedford is the absolute worst person to take exploring new worlds and discovering new civilizations.
-
Cavor, you explain helium by describing its atomic make-up, not by saying "it's a gas found in the atmosphere on Earth."
-
At least Cavor has the decency to be horrified by what Bedford did to the Selenites.
-
"It's absolutely imperial" is their version of "wicked awesome."
