La NASA studia le interazioni fra i getti di scarico dei razzi e la superficie lunare
Lo scorso mese di marzo i ricercatori della NASA hanno impiegato un nuovo sistema di videocamere per raccogliere immagini e dati sulle interazioni fra il flusso di gas di scarico del motore del lander Blue Ghost-1 (Ghost Riders in the Sky) di Firefly Aerospace e la superficie lunare. Questi test stanno proseguendo ora sulla Terra, nella camera a vuoto sferica del Langley Research Center.
Nell’ambito del programma Artemis dell’Agenzia spaziale statunitense, questi dati saranno d’aiuto per i ricercatori al fine di comprendere i pericoli che potrebbero palesarsi quando gli esausti incandescenti dei propulsori, andranno ad impattare con il suolo selenico scagliando tutto intorno polvere e sassi.
Le informazioni acquisite, inoltre, serviranno ai soci commerciali di NASA per lo sviluppo dei propri sistemi abitati di allunaggio, per il trasporto in sicurezza di astronauti dall’orbita alla superficie lunare e ritorno, a partire dalla missione Artemis III.

Credit: NASA/YouTubePer comprendere in modo più approfondito gli aspetti scientifici nascosti dietro alle manovre di allunaggio, un gruppo di ingegneri del Langley Research Center della NASA di Hampton, Virginia, ha iniziato all’interno della camera a vuoto sferica di 18 m del centro, una campagna di prove sperimentali sulle interazioni fra i getti di gas esausti dei motori e un replicante della superficie selenica.
Ashley Korzun, responsabile dello studio presso il centro di ricerca della NASA, ha spiegato che si tratta del più complesso test di questo genere ad essere svolto in una camera a vuoto.
Se fossi a bordo di un veicolo spaziale e dovessi spostare tutta quella regolite durante l’atterraggio, una parte di essa colpirà il mio lander, mentre un’altra parte verrebbe scagliata verso altri oggetti come carichi utili, esperimenti scientifici, rover lunari ed altre strutture. Comprendere la fisica di questa situazione è fondamentale al fine di garantire la sicurezza dell’equipaggio e il successo della missione.
La campagna di test, che proseguirà fino alla primavera del prossimo anno, dovrebbe fornire un’abbondanza di dati che i ricercatori potranno utilizzare per migliorare i modelli predittivi ed influenzare la progettazione del veicolo spaziale. Come ha già anticipato Korzun, di tratta di un’impresa di grandi dimensioni, che coinvolge diversi centri della NASA, istituzioni accademiche ed entità commerciali piccole e grandi.

Per la prima serie di prove in corso questo autunno, viene impiegato un sistema di simulazione di getto funzionante a etano sviluppato dallo Stennis Space Center della NASA di Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, costruito e gestito dal personale della Purdue University di West Lafayette, Indiana. Il sistema a etano genera una spinta massima di circa 45 kg e produce un getto caldo, ma che non brucia.
Dopodiché, per la seconda tornata di test si impiegherà un motore a razzo ibrido da 35 cm e stampato in 3D sviluppato dalla Utah State University di Logan, Utah, e testato in aprile presso il Marshall Space Flight Center della NASA di Huntsville, Alabama. Esso produce una spinta di circa 16 kg, bruciando il suo propellente solido assieme ad un flusso di ossigeno gassoso per creare un getto di gas esausti caldi, simulando così l’effetto di un vero motore a razzo, ma su scala ridotta per questa serie di prove.
Gli ingegneri effettueranno delle accensioni di entrambi i sistemi a varie altezze in una specie di catino largo più o meno due metri e profondo 30 centimetri circa, contenente un materiale che simula la regolite denominato Black Point-1, composto da granelli frastagliati e coesivi, proprio come quelli che compongono la regolite.
«Questo sistema ci offre una vasta gamma di condizioni di prova, in modo tale da permetterci di poter ragionare su veicoli spaziali di diverso tipo che vanno sulla Luna, in modo da capire cosa faranno quando atterreranno o cercheranno di decollare dalla sua superficie», ha continuato Korzun.
Una serie di diversi strumenti, inclusa una versione specializzata delle Stereo Cameras for Lunar-Plume Surface Studies (SCALPSS 1.1) , ovvero il sistema di ripresa video che ha registrato l’interazione getto-superficie durante l’atterraggio del Blue Ghost sulla Luna dello scorso 2 marzo, catturerà le immagini e i dati delle varie accensioni, le quali dureranno circa sei secondi ciascuno. La strumentazione misurerà la formazione del cratere, la velocità e l’angolazione delle particelle espulse e la forma dei pennacchi dei motori.

Infatti l’intera operazione è da considerarsi modulare per progettazione, e può essere utile alla NASA in preparazione alle missioni su Marte. Il simulatore di regolite può essere sostituito con un simulatore di terreno marziano, che è più simile alla sabbia. I componenti hardware e la strumentazione possono essere smontati e sostituiti da attrezzature e simulatori di lander marziani. Inoltre la camera a vuoto sferica può essere regolata per simulare la pressione atmosferica della superficie del Pianeta Rosso: «Marte è sempre nei nostri piani», ha concluso Korzun.

Credit: NASA/Wesley ChambersNel sottolineare la complessità senza precedenti per la NASA, di questa campagna di test sulle interazioni fa getti dei propulsori e la superficie selenica, Daniel Stubbs, ingegnere del gruppo di studio del centro Marshall dell’agenzia statunitense, ha spiegato che: «I dati ottenuti con questi test svolti al centro Langley saranno critici per lo sviluppo e la validazione di modelli per la previsione degli effetti delle interazioni getto-superficie per l’atterraggio sulla Luna e anche su Marte, assicurando cosi il successo dei sistemi abitati di atterraggio e la sicurezza dei nostri astronauti».

La prossima missione del programma Artemis sarà Artemis II, che partirà non prima di aprile 2026 e che nel corso dei suoi 10 giorni di durata porterà quattro astronauti della NASA ad effettuare il sorvolo della Luna per poi fare ritorno sulla Terra.
