Part 2 Tunis sheep continued: felting experiment
I apologize for the last long thread--I'll post fewer at a time..I carded the waste leftover from spinning and made a felt sample. It wasn't great, but not bad either, so I soaked it overnight in Aluminum triformate, which is a cold-water mordant. I dyed it with madder root, which I'll share in the next post.
The felt shown here is not quite completely done, and I had to fix it a bit. -
Little yellow eyed penguin has feet now I have non-broken needles.
The needles from Filzrausch are worlds better and so much finer than the flimsy one that came in the beginner’s Ashford kit. And a wooden holder ensures a relaxed grip. Much more enjoyable. Less self-mutilatory too.

Yellow eyed penguin … or something like it?
The needle in this kit was particularly poor and snapped before I got the feet done.Definitely doesn’t come close to my friend’s two cuties, but a reasonable first attempt at a new craft.

For those who don't know what felting is, it is sculpting with wool. Any wool will do: sheep, alpaca, goat, even hair from your dog, if properly prepared. The wool is compacted upon itself using small, sharp barbed needles and eventually solidifies into the shape of your choosing. It can be used to make lifelike animals or whimsical creatures and scenes that don't require turning neighborhoods into deserts or blowing up the power grid. #felting #fiber #art

My wife decided to learn felting, and this is her first attempt.
I don’t know anything about it but it looks really good for a first attempt!

I'm looking into learning felting, I've done some #knitting that I felted (both in washing machine and in dryer, both work fine).
I would like to learn how to felt some specific spots a but more.
Should I use a needle for that? Or water and soap and by hand rubbing? Also, I would like to felt some motifs on top of an already felted product (bag/hat). How to do that?
Suggestions for specific resources welcome!

My ADHD is showing. I finished this before Christmas, even took the finished photo, and then completely forgot to share it.
I strongly recommend felting as an easy, low impact craft for even the worst of tired days! It's also very easy to felt over mistakes, making it great for the self critical!

Activity to mark the transition from the end of academic term to the end-of-year break: knitting silly slippers to be felted.
Pattern: The one whose designer has removed another pattern from Etsy, which I find regrettable.
Yarn: Rico Fun Felting Wool

Fumbling through felting tip #2: the hoop is optional!
And it's very easy to correct mistakes by felting over it! A little work can go a long way, so it's fast, too!
You'll also break needles. You may or may not go through periodic spells of 'gleeful stabbies' that precipitate a needle break.
I give it a 9/10 recommended for the #disabled and #chronicillness crowd.

Saw the Woven Histories exhibit at MoMA and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the textile arts. #Weaving has the largest representation, but there was also #SurfaceDesign, #felting, #basketry #metalwork and more.

Heyyyy mastodon!
It’s time for a snapshot #introduction of me, and how I'm hoping to contribute to this platform
My name is Cassie and I run a Philadelphia based community craft and art group. The group started 9 years ago on another well known platform and over the years it stopped serving our purposes. My hope is that this space can help connect our local community and inspire others to follow suit.
I prefer she/her and they/them pronouns and I default to using they/them pronouns with new people that don’t specify a preference.
I'm an #artist, #crafter, #organizer, and #designer. In order of most experienced to least, I utilize and teach the following skills: #leatherwork #accessorydesign #handembroidery #chainstitchembroidery #basketweaving #handbuildingclay #bookmaking #printing #surfacedesign #naturaldyeing #felting #spinningyarn #painting #drawing
I like to create, I have a love of aquatic fish, mushrooms, bugs, bones, prismatic colors, texture, line work, anything tufted, and gin is the way to my heart.
I look forward to sharing my creations and offering support with questions about any skillsets that I am able!

This isn't a modern plushie!
Possibly depicting a swan, it was made from felt by Scythians of the Pazyryk culture, 252-238 BCE. It's in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. https://depts.washington.edu/silkroad/museums/shm/shmpazyryk.html

🧶🧶🧶 @MisuseCase Yes and I do love them. Hope you can post some pix of yours. I have some I love from these folks, loving their enamel skulls. They also do duo sets, like this silver bird paired with a pink enamel cherry blossom, currently in use on a WIP. Wonder what other people like to use?

Hey guys, I found this creature, anyone able to identify it?
Just kidding, this is my Goblin Hat!! Out of all my hats, this one I think looks most like it's the home of some fantastical woollen hermit crab that's going to scuttle away at any moment.
