  1. The Faroe Islands are home to the world’s first undersea roundabout.

It’s part of Eysturoyartunnilin, a 11 km tunnel network between two of the islands.

The roundabout, nicknamed “the jellyfish”, features an illuminated artwork by Tróndur Patursson.

  2. Silent Sunday

Sea cliffs at Váger, Faroe Islands

We had a wonderful week climbing, swimming and enjoying the local beer on our way to Iceland in 2024. Long multi pitch climbs, not technically difficult but exhausting.

  6. Hype for the Future 87B: The Isolated Islands of Europe

Introduction The North Sea is home to the Orkney, Shetland, and Faroe Island territories. Orkney and Shetland are today part of Scotland, while the Faroe Islands are today part of Denmark. However, all three (3) island chains effectively appear the same geographically, with mostly cultural differences separating the three island chains. The Orkney Islands are the furthest south and are immediately north of Caithness on the Scottish mainland, while the Shetland Islands to the north represent […]

  10. Hype for the Future 87A: The Faroe Islands Explained

Introduction Located off the north coast of Great Britain, the Faroe Islands are completely unrelated to Scotland or the United Kingdom as a whole, especially culturally and historically. While geographically related to the Orkney and Shetland Islands further south, the Faroe Islands have largely been associated with the Vikings for a longer stretch, from Norway to Denmark. Information The Faroe Islands represent an isolated island chain of the European continent, located to the north and […]

  11. Hype for the Future 87/284: Faroese Americans

Overview Though Faroese Americans have likely existed in small numbers from the nineteenth century, the population of the Faroe Islands has always been relatively small to begin with, so the host region had never been populated to a level typical of prominent host nations. However, in the cases that Faroese Americans likely exist, the most common migration paths are either toward Denmark or toward Norway, not overseas.

  12. Hype for the Future 86B: The Faroese Chain Dance

Introduction The Faroese Chain Dance refers to one of perhaps the only dances to have remained intact since the Middle Ages, with a communal dancing pattern and effectively a circle focused on the right arms of participants. The chain dance associated with the Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 involves significant movement and adherence to Medieval 🏰 traditions in numerous categories, including the presence of the entire community in question. Usage The Faroese Chain Dance is typically used in […]

  13. Hype for the Future 81E: Iceland (Ísland) 🇮🇸 (Seyðisfjörður)

Introduction Iceland is an isolated country, often associated with Scandinavia though physically located far from the Scandinavian mainland. Unlike the mainland Scandinavian Peninsula, Iceland maintains a more conservative Norse identity thanks to contact difficulties between the island and the mainland(s) in any direction. Significant distances are required to identify land that does not belong to Iceland in any direction, whether toward Greenland (not very populated), Scotland (culturally […]

Introduction Unfortunately, the previous post could not cover the entirety of the different subnational regions, but could only cover the specific regions of the British Isles and the Romance nations. This post is specifically dedicated to the nations of Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. 15. Hype for the Future 73D: L’Anse aux Meadows

Introduction The Vikings and the associated settlements, though largely identified as having originated within the region now known as Northern Europe and Scandinavia, have since expanded from the modern nations of Norway and Sweden east into Finland and Russia, though only barely so, but more importantly, south and west into Denmark, Scotland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and, finally, Newfoundland. Old World or New World? Prior to 1492, the regions that the Vikings had settled […]
