So I finally got my hands on my old euphonium! This thing is at least 40 years old, possibly 50+. It was my dad's instrument before he gave it to me when I was in 4th grade. I think it was originally laquered. It looked fine the last time I saw it, but that was… like 15-20 years ago. My dad was playing it I think, because the case got changed and he disassembled the valves, so clearly it was being used at some point in the past 20 years. But in the past 10 I know it hasn't been used because my parents divorced and it ended up at my mom's new house in Florida. At this point the finish is showing wear and in some places it's completely gone, mostly where your hand rests to play.
The exposed brass has developed a nice patina, but what concerns me are a few spots of green rust around some joints. Some of the bottom valves are some kind of white metal, stainless steel possibly because it's perfectly shiny even after all this time, so I know it's not silver.
So now the goal is to find a local repair shop for brass instruments and see what they can do. I think the green rusting should be mediated. The hand rest being worn and having patina is fine by me, but there are a few spots on the front of the bell where the finish (I think it was originally clear laquer) is coming off and it doesn't look so good, so I may end up getting the whole thing re-finished. Not sure if I'll go back to the original laquer, or do something else. I do actually like instruments with a darker sound, so I wouldn't be opposed to the potential sound change of a varnish or laquer. I'm not interested in silver, it seems way too high maintenance. The original laquer did fantastic for 30+ years, so I'm thinking either that, or doing raw brass.

For those of you who live within an hour or so of Arlington, VA, it's worth it to come at least to the evening concerts. Everything is free, but you have to go thru base security. The only place civilians can buy food and eat on base is the bowling alley.
If you ever played any band instrument at all, these concerts are worth going to; the service bands, and particularly the Army Band (Pershing's Own) and Marine Band (President's Own) are the best bands in this hemisphere. #tuba #euphonium -

This is an appreciation post for the #Euphonium. I am sure my brother @rooktallon would agree with me that it is seen commonly as an obscure instrument to hear in a concert #band, but the following video is of a Rapsody dedicated to the seemingly obscure but beautiful sound of the Euphonium. I hope people enjoy it, because as a French Hornist myself, I feel like the Euphonium needs some praise also because its such an incredible sounding instrument that gets shoved aside for the Horns and Trumpets when it deserves just as much love and praise for its versitile sound, and no, contrary to popular belief, the Euphonium isn't just a smaller Tuba.

Sad to say, today I had to give up on playing the first movement of the solo I was working on. I recognize my limits for what they are and knew I wouldn't have been able to make it performance ready in time for the recital I was going to perform at. So, since I only have to play one song, I'm choosing the second movement as it's more relaxed. But that's not what I'm here for. I'm looking for some genuine ideas on how to increase my ability to play at a higher register on my instrument. I'm a Euphonium player but any brass instrument players feel free to give me some tips on what I can do to help me get up there. Trumpet players make it sound so easy but I want to know how to do it physically, and what mental things do you do to stop yourself tightening up your muscles whenever you have to play at a higher register because I get nervous every time and it causes more problems than it solves. #brass #euphonium #music

For any band nerds out there who may agree, what do you think is best? I've heard many interpretations of Horovitz's Euphonium Concerto. I want to perform it for myself soon. Anyway, one performance sounded slow and methodical. The other performance was fast and frantic to my ear. Now, I know I'm being a bit biased. Exhausting day of TUSAB Tuba-Euphonium Workshop followed by contradancing at Glen Echo. Fort Myer is a pretty large base, and the recitals were at one end and the vendors/exhibits were in a building near the other end, plus walking over to Visitor Control to get my access pass extended from Friday to Saturday. Which yes, I will be spending all day Sat at this; most of it's way beyond my #euphonium level but interesting nonetheless. But my feet are gonna hurt when I wake up Sunday.
