  3. Ultradireita: as raízes da sedução

Novo livro analisa as ambivalências no coração do autoritarismo.

  4. @algernon It’s almost impressive how so many people cling on to their (anti-)social media imperialist overloards.

#ErichFromm would likely have something to say about this.

"We mask our own moral problem from ourselves if we focus our attention on comparing our culture with modes of life which are the negation of the best achievements of humanity, and thus we ignore the fact that we too bow down to power, not that of a dictator and a political bureaucracy allied with him, but to the anonymous power of the market, of success, of public opinion, of 'common sense'—or rather, of common nonsense—and of the machine whose servants we have become." p.248f

  9. @lymphomation Ironically, Karl, this post of yours exemplifies some of the worst elements in the social-media health information you decry:

    1. Sweeping generalizations uncontrolled by critical thought that might have led you to qualify or refine these assertions

    2. Accompanying image lacks source information (which BTW is easy to supply in alt text) and does nothing to support the post's broad assertions. For all we know, it could be a stochastic mash-up from your LLMs.

    3. An authoritarian epistemology that de-centers human experience. I'd invite you to compare #ErichFromm 's discussion of the "magic helper" in 'Escape from Freedom', and also consider the passage in the following post ...

  11. "The ideas of freedom or democracy deteriorate into nothing but irrational faith once they are not based upon the productive experience of each individual but are presented to him by parties or states which force him to believe in these ideas.
    ...
Man cannot live without faith. The crucial question for our own generation and the next ones is whether this faith will be an irrational faith in leaders, machines, success, or the rational faith in man based on the experiences of our own productive activity."

  13. "From here we come to another question, that of sacrifice. Does our definition of freedom as nonsubmissions to any *higher* power exclude sacrifices, including the sacrifice of one's life?

This is a particularly important question today, when Fascism proclaims self-sacrifice as the highest virtue and impresses many people with its idealistic character. The answer to this question follows logically from what has been said so far. There are two entirely different types of sacrifice. It is one of the tragic facts of life that the demands of our physical self and the aims of our mental self can conflict; that actually we may have to sacrifice our physical self in order to assert the integrity of our spiritual self. This sacrifice will never lose its tragic quality. Death is never sweet, not even if it is suffered for the highest ideal. It remains unspeakably bitter, and still it can be the utmost expression of our individuality. Such sacrifice is fundamentally different from the 'sacrifice' which Fascism preaches. There, sacrifice is not the highest price man may have to pay to assert his self, but it is an aim in itself. This masochistic sacrifice sees the fulfillment of life in its very negation, in the annihilation of the self. It is only the supreme expression of what Fascism aims at in all its ramifications—the annihilation of the individual self and its utter submission to a higher power. It is the perversion of true sacrifice as much as suicide is the utmost perversion of life. True sacrifice presupposes an uncompromising wish for spiritual integrity. The sacrifice of those who have lost it only covers up their moral bankruptcy"

  15. "Hitler proved to be such an efficient tool because he combined the characteristics of a resentful, hating, petty bourgeois, with whom the lower middle class could identify themselves emotionally and socially, with those of an opportunist who was ready to serve the interests of the German industrialists and Junkers. Originally he posed as the Messiah of the old middle class, promised the destruction of department stores, the breaking of the domination of banking capital, and so on. The record is clear enough. These promises were never fulfilled. However, that did not matter. Nazism never had any genuine political or economic principles. It is essential to understand that the very principle of Nazism is its radical opportunism. What mattered is that hundreds of thousands of petty bourgeois, who in the normal course of development had little chance to gain money or power, as members of the Nazi bureaucracy now got a large slice of the wealth and prestige they forced the upper classes to share with them. Others who were not members of the Nazi machine were given the jobs taken away from Jews and political enemies; and as for the rest, although they did not get more bread, they got 'circuses'. The emotional satisfaction afforded by these sadistic spectacles and by an ideology which gave them a feeling of superiority over the rest of mankind was able to compensate them—for a time at least—for the fact that their lives had been impoverished, economically and culturally."
