  8. #Ember has just rediscovered hydraulic fracking - but make no mistake, what was in 2000-2010 presented as the ultimate technology of apocalypse (‘earthquakes’, ‘toxic mud leaks’, ‘methane coming out of the tap’ and, in general, a total mayhem) has been transformed into an environmentally friendly technology for ‘creating permeability in geothermal rocks’ and ‘artificially fractured rock’ 😄

    Of course, fracking was just as safe in 2000-2010 as it is today, the difference is obviously in perception, which at that time was carefully crafted with Russian money in the US, the EU and Ukraine.

    I very much support this technology for increasing the economic potential of geothermal energy, but I just cannot ignore how stupid the narratives about fracking were back then which, in turn, led to Europe dependence on Russian gas when the US over time started getting 80% of their gas from local fracking wells.

    Climate change continues. There is broad evidence (and consensus) that our environment, thus our ways of life, our livelihoods— indeed, our lives— are threatened. On the heels of a call from Trump to world leaders to abandon the climate fight, followed by a disappointing COP30 conference, it’s easy to be discouraged. But that, of course, is no answer.

    Rather, we have to find ways to mitigate the damage that we’ve already locked in, even as we acclerate a transition to clean energy… which begins by (re-)framing and (re-)focusing the challenge. Ember, a clean energy think tank, suggests a candidate that, while it speaks to the moral obligations addressed by one of the models it means to augment/replace, has a more positive orientation…

    Humanity is graduating from burning fossil commodities to harnessing manufactured technologies—from hunting scarce fossils to farming the inexhaustible sun, from consuming Earth’s resources to
    merely borrowing them.

    This isn’t a marginal climate substitution. It’s an energy revolution.

    The magnetic centre is the electron: we are revolutionising how we generate, use, and connect
    electrons. Solar and wind are conquering electricity supply. EVs, heat pumps, and AI are electrifying major new uses. Batteries and digitalisation are connecting supply and demand.

    Three reinforcing shifts. One energy revolution. The electrotech revolution.

    At its core, this revolution is driven by physics, economics, and geopolitics. After all, the arc of energy
    history bends towards solutions that are leaner, cheaper and more secure.

    Short-terms setbacks matter, but fundamentals matter more. And the fundamentals are stacked in electrotech’s favour.

    Physics. Electrotech makes a mockery of setting fossils on fire and losing two-thirds of the energy to heat. Electrotech is three times as efficient.

    Economics. Technologies get cheaper with scale. Commodities get more expensive the deeper you dig.

    Geopolitics. Three quarters of the world is dependent on fossil imports. 92% of countries have renewables potential over 10x their current demand.

    Electrotech has grown exponentially for decades. The difference today is that it’s too cheap to contain and too big to ignore. If current exponentials hold for five more years, global fossil demand will fall off its plateau.

  10. Weltweit erstmals mehr Strom aus Erneuerbaren als aus Kohle

    China war laut einer Studie der Denkfabrik Ember im ersten Halbjahr 2025 für 55 Prozent des weltweiten Solarwachstums verantwortlich.

    #Erneuerbare Energien haben mehr #Strom produziert als #Kohle. Der Anteil der Erneuerbaren am globalen #Strommix stieg auf 34,3 Prozent, während der #Kohleanteil auf 33,1 Prozent sank, so Experten von #Ember. In #Deutschland wurden laut Statistischem Bundesamt im ersten Halbjahr rund 220 Terawattstunden Strom erzeugt, davon 62 Prozent aus Erneuerbaren und 21 Prozent aus #Kohle. Die weltweite #Stromnachfrage wuchs im ersten Halbjahr 2025 um 369 TWh. Dieser Anstieg wurde durch die Zunahme der #Solarstromerzeugung (plus 306 TWh) und #Windstromerzeugung (plus 97 TWh) mehr als ausgeglichen, heißt es in der Studie. Die Stromerzeugung aus #Wasserkraft ging deutlich zurück, die aus #Bioenergie leicht, während aus #Atomenergie etwas mehr Strom produziert wurde. Fossile Energien wie #Kohle, #Gas und #Öl verzeichneten dagegen einen leichten Rückgang. #China war laut Studie für 55 Prozent des weltweiten Solarwachstums verantwortlich, gefolgt von den #USA (14 Prozent), der EU (12 Prozent), Indien (knapp 6 Prozent) und #Brasilien (gut 3 Prozent).

  11. Why I am glad that Drupal did not adopt Ember

    More and more as I work with Ember and Discourse I am thankful that Drupal did not end up adopting Ember.

    It is a pain in the ass to work with. Maybe it is the fact that Discourse is also a pain in the ass to work with, but in any case, that is what I am feeling about Ember.

    Currently I dislike Ember’s lack of a comprehensible lifecycle for components. Tracked properties don’t seem to work to allow a component to re-render / check itself. I never would have thought I would be pining for Angular.

    For instance, in Discourse, we can theoretically react to route/page changes this way. I

  12. Le #EmberFest c'est quand même une conférence très choupi. Les gens sont bienveillants, c'est assez petit pour pouvoir assister à tous les talks, et des devs venus pour la 1ère fois cette année m'ont dit être très content·e·s (comme quoi c'est pas que moi qui le dis).

    Bref, c'est une bonne raison de plus d'essayer le framework #Ember si vous ne connaissez pas encore.

  13. Figuring out state management with Discourse

    I was pretty frustrated and disappointed that there did not seem to be a good state management that I could use in a component in a Discourse theme.

    By that, I mean that if I had a component plugged into an outlet on every page, there does not seem to be a simple documented way to update the component based on route changes without building your own state management.

    This led me to delve into Ember services. So to do this in a Discourse theme we need

    • An initializer (as opposed to an api-initializer?)
    • A service

    An initializer is an object with a name property and an initialize method, as opposed to...
